Disco-ee songs by rock bands

Post by WentEast »

We all know and beat up on I Was Made For Loving You, but what others dabbled in four-on-the-floor disco beats?

I’ll start:

Miss You - Rolling Sones
Renegade - Styx
Girl’s Got Rhythm - AC/DC
Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
*edit*
Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
Disco Strangler - Eagles

I mentioned Kiss doing a Disco song to a long-time fan. He was not happy. He said they never did. Denial.

Actually, they absolutely do (see below).
DemonFilth2001 wrote: Thu May 23, 2024 1:51 pm Renegade being disco? Another weird take.
Weird but not totally baseless.

Basically, a more accurate thread title should be "Rock songs with a four on the floor beat".

It absolutely does not. Just because it has a 4 on the floor beat doesn't mean it's disco. Music has a lot more nuance than just that.

Jesus Christ.

You literally said "Girl's Got Rhythm and Renegade in no way have anything disco in them.".

A four in the floor drum beat is literally the hallmark of disco, and is the reason the OP heard them as having a disco sound to them, even if they didn't realize it.

You can disagree that they're not disco songs, but to say those songs "in no way have anything disco in them" is false.

Is it that hard to just put it back in your pants for a second and learn something?

Yeah, guys. A pizza uses marinara sauce that has sugar as an ingredient. And sugar is literally the hallmark of cotton candy.

So pizza and cotton candy. Same thing.

Foghat - Slow Ride, the im in the mood part

Led Zeppelin - Trampled By Foot,. Eevery time I hear it I get visions of people in leisure suits disco dancing to it on a Saturday Night Fever style lighted dance floor.

The Kinks "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman"
Cheap Trick "Gonna Raise Hell"

The underlying beat for both songs is disco. With "Gonna Raise Hell", the strings arrangement adds more to the disco feel of the song. Given when both songs came out, the late 70s, it's no surprise.

4 on the floor is not exclusive to disco obviously. Jesus Christ indeed. If you played someone Renegade or Girls Got Rhythm and then asked them to name any music genre that comes to mind, nobody would say disco. That's right, nobody.

Probably because "Love Rollercoaster" is a cover of an actual disco song by The Ohio Players. Do covers qualify for this thread?

You're just moving the goalposts away from your original statement.

That wouldn't be the first genre anyone would say, but there's been discussions going back to the early 80s about the fact that Rudd used "disco beats" as part of the AC/DC sound on albums like Powerage.

I even heard Steve Gadd mention it in an interview ages ago (mid 90s IIRC).

Here's an interesting opinion piece on the evolution of AC/DC's sound that refers to that time period as their "disco era". Yes, it's hyperbolic, but he has a point:

https://thequietus.com/opinion-and-essa ... uperstars/

Regardless, I never said they were disco songs, and in fact my original post is me implying that they're not, saying that a more accurate title would be "Rock songs with a four on the floor beat".

Your original statement was that those songs "in no way have anything disco in them", which is just not true. There very much is, and you can acknowledge that without calling them disco songs.
