What was the last good KISS album?

Post by pieceofme »

Monster and Sonic Boom are the two weakest KISS albums. But I'm a KISS fan so I still enjoy them. I can't classify either as good albums though.

The first half of Carnival of souls is really strong but then it tails off.

I loved Psycho Circus when I was first getting into KISS, but it has not aged well.

MTV Unplugged is a brilliant album, so that is my answer.

For studio albums, I begrudgingly have to admit it has to be Revenge, even though it is overrated by KISS fans. It is still better than any studio album that came after it. Although with the notable exception of Hot in the Shade, pretty much every KISS album released before it is better.

Psycho Circus

IMO Psycho Circus qualifies as "good"....... title track is great and the first 7 songs are good to ok, "I Finally Found My Way" is the only complete turd.......

And.....I'll take Sonic Boom and Monster over Carnival of Holes and Crazy Nights........

I could agree with this. With Lick it Up being the last GREAT Kiss album.

Sonic Boom and Monster aren't even in the bottom 5 of Kiss studio albums. They're kinda in the middle with Unmasked, Crazy Nights and Dynasty.

Revenge

I was actually let down by all 3 of the makeup albums. They weren't terrible, they just didn't have any magic to them. Actually... I don't know. When Modern Day Delilah is the best song on the record, maybe they are terrible.

I think Psycho Circus is my least favorite Kiss album. Its prolly not the worst, but I dont like anything on it, and in terms of dropping the ball in every way imaginable at a time where victory should have been easy, it wins hands down.

When I was 14 they were all good or great, but they were all gradually diminished by an expansion of my musical tastes.

So I would have to say Creatures Of The Night.

Sonic Boom. For a band trying to deliberately re-create their old sound, I think they did a good job.

Monster? Not so much.

Love Gun, which I mostly like, I rank as sixth of the first six studio albums.

Creatures

Psycho Circus was Crue level bad. Great title song. Every other song is simply bad to horrible.

Animalize. I’m in the minority but for some reason I like that album a lot. Heaven’s On Fire I could do without but the rest of it is pretty strong and heavy. After this they went off the deep end with the glam and the power ballads. Carnival of Souls had some interesting stuff too but I don’t really view it as a Kiss album. It’s more like a Wicked Lester thing to me.

If live records count, then MTV Unplugged is the far and away winner here. Not only is it a great live KISS album, it's one of the best in the whole MTV Unplugged series, and there were a lot of great ones in there.

Studio-wise...ugh. For me it's a 4-way tie (and I know that's a shitty excuse for an answer) between Asylum, Revenge, Carnval of Souls and Psycho Circus. There's plenty of good stuff on all those albums, but also a lot of turds, too. Take the best of those 4 and you'd have a really strong double album.

Creatures of the Night.

Something magical about KISS still wearing their makeup.

It an interesting one, It kind of builds the excitement well and then delivers nothing. Best songs on Psycho are Dreaming`and Journey of a 1000 Years.

Last good album for me was Carnival of Souls. Gene`s songs are all good - great there. That's enough.

I can still listen to and enjoy Paul's '78, most of Dynasty and most of Creatures and Lick It Up, but beyond that there's always too much filler (thanks, Gene) and songs that I just can't handle listening to ever again through being overplayed.

HOT IN THE SHADE is their worst album. Almost all of it doesn't sound or feel like a KISS album. Slide guitar? LOL

I don't even count MONSTER or SONIC BOOM because I don't consider them KISS albums, but rather contrived nonsense to try to legitimize a tribute band line-up.

yeah, most of it isn’t good.
I guess ‘crazy nights’ would be the last “good” album.

shade was like a release of glorified demos since the big budget CN flopped.
That was the end of KISS as a creative entity in my eyes

No, I'm merely giving my opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree. More interested in the responses and the range of albums is impressive.

Actually, I got into KISS in 1999. After Psycho Circus. It just happened to be one of the first KISS albums I purchased.
