He had an MTV hit with “blue Jean,” which I think is one of his better songs.

I don’t think he’s overrated overall.
Some fans deifying him is obnoxious - Same thing is happening to Nick Cave

We all have opinions. I only like one of his songs. Maybe I'd have more of an emotional attachment to the music if I grew up in the 70s.

I like Bowie, but he is one of those artists who has picked up steam over time. He definitely wasn't that big of a deal when I was a kid. He had a few songs that played on radio like Sufragette City or Space Oddity, but I didn't know a single person who had shit like Ziggy Stardust or Alladin Sane until well after I moved to California.

I think he probably was bigger in the early seventies, but alienated the US with the Berlin trilogy or whatevz. By the time I was getting into music, I only knew him as the MTV guy with Let's Dance and stuff. It was kind of weird later figuring out that he was that guy who had done those other songs liiiiike ten years earlier.

...and now he is like the biggest thing ever and has become attached to this sort of LGBTQ+ narrative of transformation and stuff.

Queen is kind of the same. Definitely bigger now than they were post-Hot Space in the U.S.

Love a lot of Bowie's songs, but, like Queen, I despise several of his biggest hits.

Changes, Heroes and Space Oddity I don't mind so much, but

Fashion
Let's Dance
Fame
Under Pressure

...not a fan. And Golden Years...can do without that one too.

His earlier, rawer stuff was solid and interesting IMHO. Santa Monica '72 for example is a great live record.

And like Queen he was absolutely massive in the UK in the 70s.

The guy has released a ton of stuff while switching genres all along the way. Yea, some of it's bloated and "overrated", not Heroes, though. Ron Keel wishes he wrote that song!

Ron isn’t jealous of Bowie. He didn’t want to be a pop, dance, or new wave band. He wanted to play metal. He succeeded.

Major Tom is way overrated. Peter Schillings version of Major Tom is way better.

The "literally" of the internet.

"I don't like Space Oddity very much" would be a little too on the nose I guess.

True. Regardless, I owned 2 KEEL releases and the Steeler release. Zero Bowie. Like most guys my age.

He’s got many better ones from that time period.
And all the cover versions are garbage
I like it ok. The only cover Ive head is the Wallflowers version they did when they were big and I thought it was pretty decent.

My Bowie knowledge is mostly from the ChangesBowie CD, although I've listened to it a shitload. I can't stand John, I'm Only Dancing or Fashion but love space Oddity, Young Americans, Modern Love, and that song in The Martian.

Theres a popular newer country song that interpolates the riff from Rebel, Rebel. It actually sorta works. Better than most songs on country radio.

I heard that country song - thought it sucked.

My favorite Bowie album is ‘Low.’

I just remembered he was in a band Tin Machine in the 90s. Why no mention of it here? Was it that bad?

It wasn't good. The idea of it, a kind of artsy, outside-the-lines band with rocking songs was fine, but problem was there just weren't any good songs.

David has done a bunch of great ones, though. Changes, Rebel Rebel, The Man Who Sold The World, Life On Mars?, Suffragette City, Young Americans, Golden Years, TVC 15, Sound and Vision, Look Back In Anger, Ashes To Ashes, Modern Love, This Is Not America, Pretty Pink Rose . . . and then not much great for a while until the final two albums, "The Next Day" and "Blackstar." Those two are my favorites as complete albums where just about every song is strong. Earlier in his career, I heard him more as a singles artist. Like R.E.M. or something like that, I would like 1-3 tracks per album but didn't often enjoy the whole records. (For R.E.M., Life's Rich Pageant and Automatic For the People worked as complete albums).
