Tramp: "The last wave of 80s bands were a complete joke"

Post by Bono Nettencourt »

"It (MTV) basically goaded every '80s band to kill themselves because in the end — and I'm not gonna say myself — but in the end, the last wave of the '80s bands were a complete joke. They had copied us five million times, and I can't stand listening or looking at it, because there's no originality."

"There were only so many waves, and after that, everything was a copy. I can sit and say that, but when I look at that, that's the way I see it. It was cloned."

Did that make their '91 album flop?

It wasn't a main attraction that year.

For a moment I saw the headline as "Trump" and thought: either the insanity has fully set in now he's opining on 80s metal, or this is an Onion headline.

As to the actual article, "and I'm not gonna say myself" also means Mike's self-delusion is still strong.

Hope he isn’t disrespecting Danger Danger or Nelson that would be a travesty

Some got Firehouse and White Lion confused- don’t hate on them Mr Lion
Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

WL were obvious Van Halen clones with a dash of Dokken but as I wrote in another thread WTCC was ahead of its time and predated both the political power ballad - think Wind of Change, Time for Change - and the (almost) all acoustic hair metal ballad (More than Words etc).

Most hard rock ballads in 87 followed the Still Loving You / Home Sweet Home formula. Lyrics about love or being on the road and starting softly before kicking in with a bigger than life full band chorus.

Tramp & White Lion were/are in my bottom 5 of worst bands of that era & a MAJOR reason why the genre flopped

So what would be the others in the bottom 5? If all of the 80s, prob Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Helix and Krokus, but all of those were 70s bands that peaked before White Lion's debut.
Worst mid-to-late 80s bands - Britny Fox? Gorky Park? King Kobra? Madam X? Hm, maybe Gorky Park and Madam X would edge out Twisted Sister and Krokus as those actually have some good songs but it's also a bit unfair as they have a lot more albums to choose from.

Those are the bands I thought of too as the "last wave". He's got to be careful. As much as I personally like his solo albums, in the US it's all about White Lion. He's toured 3 years in a row now for die hard audiences that still hold these 40 year old songs close to them.

Is there a genre that hates itself as much as hair metal does?

White Lion was on Atlantic. They probably loved being on the same label as Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, but resented a few of their younger label mates who were eating up the resources.

Skid Row?

Winger?

Mr. Big?

Tuff?

???

One of these things is not like the other.

Mike always was the weak link. Vito and James should’ve got a different singer and drummer.

Think you should give Europe a chance. I can understand not liking their biggest hits TFC and Carrie, but there's a lot more there. I prefer the following albums with Kee Marcello, others love the post-reunion albums - War of Kings is pretty good - or the NWOBHM sounding Wings of Tomorrow.
