Just saw a Reddit thread about how Sabrina Carpenter suddenly dropped her backing track because internet trolls were calling her out for lip-syncing.

I watched a YouTube video about this by a sound engineer a while back. Dua Lipa does the same thing. They're singing live (and it's up in the mix) but there's a track too.

The idea is... off-key live vocal + on-key backing track = only slightly off-key, "realistic" live track.

I agree. Fuck laptops and backing tracks.
There was some idiot in another thread recently who said that Hendrix sucked and didn't play well live

He didn’t play well live at times.
He didn’t play well dead either

Aerosmith was using backing tracks during the permanent vacation tour. At least the backing vocals were. During horses when they were backing vocals there was no one else there on microphone, but they were filled in perfectly.

What is “horses?”

Keep in mind, Aerosmith has had an off stage keyboardist who has always heavily contributed to backing vocals since the late 1970s. They talk about him in Walk This Way, their book. I’m not saying they’ve never used some backing tapes for vocals. But Def Leppard got accused of that for a long time and they mostly do not.

I think Van Halen was playing with a track when I saw them in '92. I saw no keyboard at all and the keyboards sounded just like the album.

Those were real keyboards and a real player offstage. It was Alan “Fitz” Fitzgerald formerly of Montrose and Night Ranger. He played for VH from ‘91-‘04 and ‘07-‘12

That might be true in some instances but the keyboard parts were a track on the FUCK tour, Ed talked about recording them in the guitar magazines at the time. Unless he was bullshitting.

From my understanding Alan started with the band on the FUCK tour, and did Balance, III, ‘04 and ‘07.

He’s the keyboardist on Live Right Here, Right Now.

I remember reading back in ‘91 that Alan was the keyboardist. His Wikipedia page backs that up
