Maiden is still a really good band.

Bruce had some voice issues before and after the cancer but it sounds as though his got it back to where it should be.

I saw them about a month ago and they were great. They still put on a very good show. Bruce still runs around the stage making a spectacle of himself.

As to why Judas Priest plays smaller places than Maiden does these days? IMO Maiden is more "musical" than Priest and put on a better show.

Priest is straight on metal. They sing about metal...the music and the molten steel LOL. Halford just stands there and sings, he can't really make a production out of their show.

But Maiden is different. Their songs are more epic with more intricate parts and better stories.

For example, you could say that a Maiden tune would work better in a film.

Although both bands are from England, Maiden sounds a lot more "European" to me which broadens their appeal.

Plus, I just think Maiden is a better band with better songs.

Priest don’t fill the venues that Maiden do because they’re managed by one of the members girlfriends. Straight out of Spinal Tap.

I like SIT but come on, Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is hardly killer. Heaven Can Wait is shit too.
Heaven and Alexander are the 2 songs I skip

But Loneliness is badass . The galloping bass and the drumming are killer

No filler on Piece Of Mind? You must have a version that excludes Quest For Fire.
I said full of filler, which doesn't imply that there is no filler on the first 4 albums. Actually, to be honest killers and number of beast have filler as well.

Quest of Fire is not a Maiden classic but I would take it over most tracks released since piece of mind.
Quest for Fire is an outstanding track!
Agreed, but Sun and Steel is an outstandinger track!

Maiden was always one of those bands with 3 or 4 good songs per album. There have been a few songs since their 21st century resurgence I've liked - "The Wicker Man" and "Paschendale" - but after Seventh Son of a Seventh Son I kind of gave up on the albums. No Prayer for the Dying had 3 songs I liked: "Tailgunner", "Holy Smoke" and "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter", but I recall the rest of the album as being worse than typical Maiden filler. "Be Quick or Be Dead" and "Fear of the Dark" are OK, but the rest of Fear of the Dark isn't very good.

Also, Maiden has a more consistent line-up - five members out of five from Piece of Mind 1983, and one who has been in the band for 35 years. Priest seems like a whole different band without two of their most recognizable members (KK and Tipton) and a Halford who is not even a shadow of the great frontman he was in the 1970s and 80s. Don't believe me, watch the Dallas 1986 show on the Electric Eye dvd (or youtube). What you see is NOT what you get at a Priest show for the last 15 years. And already when KK left he cited among other things subpar live performances.

That said, last time I saw Priest was in 2015 with around 12k in 16k capacity Avicii Arena which was as good as full as they didn't open the top level, and their last two albums (Firepower and Invincible Shield) are better than anything Maiden, or for that matter Priest themselves, have released since 1986.

Apparently they do it quite well and in the studio Hslford is recognizable and Tipton is able to lay down some solos.

But it also says a lot about how both bands declined after Turbo and Somewhere.

Thank you for the recommendation. I was hoping to find the Maiden track that had the galloping bass.

Synths, man, synths. Of all the crimes against music committed in the 80s, the guitar synth may be the worst.

They had synths on Somewhere and Turbo too and those albums were great. I'd say they went to complete garbage after two more albums when they tried to be all strippen down, raw and hard. No Prayer and Jugulator suck.

Maybe he does a few A chords on the album somewhere so they can feel better about telling everyone he’s on the album just not the tour.
Don't think Tipton is as bad as you think, at least not every day. He was with them on tour and on good days he joined them for the encores, also in 2024. He is also credited as songwriter on both albums. Getting worse for sure so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play on their next album.

I was listening to Among the Living yesterday and honestly apart from the title track, none on the songs really hold up today . I struggle to sit through to any of their “classic “ albums . The last 2 records are far superior to any of their 80s output
Anthrax has aged like milk in general.
Anthrax were never really that good.Their debut was good for the time, but instead of developing like Slayer or Metallica, they started rapping and wearing silly shorts.

I’ve loved Loneliness since the first day I heard it in my Walkman. Speak for yourself, I’ve always liked Heaven Can Wait. I find POM vastly overrated. Powerslave is a little better. Neither are Number of the Beast.

I’d rank my favorite five:

Iron Maiden
Somewhere In Time
Number of the Beast
7th Son
Killers

I tapped out of Maiden at Powerslave which I found to be meh. I've heard nothing but the singles since then which I thought were ok but nothing to visit whole albums.
Once Bruce returned, I figured I'd give it a shot. BNW is awesome as is AMOLOD. Dance of Death has its moments. After that I kinda checked out again.
Disagree with NNW, but AMOLAD I think is horribly underrated. Sure it has some filler, but had some great tunes. I think the big issue people have is the long intro/outro's on every song. Plus was the first tour where they played the entire album, and NO one wanted to hear it. Love that album. Last one I can listen to and enjoy.
Yeah, I loved hearing the whole album, but they should have advertised as such. Once they got to the third song I realized what was going on and was excited about it, but everyone else around me was like WTF?

If I went expecting to hear the hits and got the entire latest album, I'd be pissed. Seems like a great way to piss off the people who paid to hear you play.

I saw Anthrax last week, they were AWESOME live. They were probably my least favourite of the Big 4, but live is another ballgame, they're far more energetic than say Megadeth, who are relatively boring live... As far as their music, their early/mid-career is spotty, but Worship Music is great, top to bottom.

Disagree. To my ears, most bands between between albums 3 and 5.
Agree. There's a select few bands that nailed it with the debut. VH, Guns, Ratt, maybe Sabbath. But many more took a few albums to find what they do best. Priest, Scorpions, Leppard, Metallica, Saxon, AC/DC....
Metallica - Kill Em' All is great front to back and was a game changer

It's a BIG part of why they are where they are right now.
I was 15 when it came out, and every fan know from my generation (5 years younger and 5 years older) knows that dvd by heart.
