Deep Purple Perfect Strangers tour

Post by pieceofme »

Anyone see this tour? It was the second highest grossing tour of 85 (behind Springsteen) in the US which surprised me. I knew perfect strangers was a popular comeback album but I didn't think it was that popular!

Only on video and I love it.

The ending cracks me up - Ian just picks someone out of the front row and takes her with him.

I would've gone to see them, but other than a couple of Florida dates, they pretty much skipped the southeast. Same goes for the House of Blue Light tour. :|

Saw it in Ottawa. Remember it was really loud, and intro to Smoke had an insane crowd reaction. One of my first shows and I have great memories of it

Epic.

At the same time that doesn’t look like a very big venue and there were a lot of massive bands in 84/85. Who said that was the second highest grossing tour? You had VH 1984 tour, were Prince and MJ touring that year? Jackson Victory tour I guess it was …

He said 85. They did arenas but multiple dates in most cities. VH and the Jacksons weren't touring in 85. Prince didn't tour as often after Purple Rain.

Anyway, it was a big reunion and tour, almost as big as Yes. I missed PS but saw HoBL. They were about an hour late getting on stage due to PA problems but still played a full set, and yes they were LOUD. I could feel the arena floor shake during SotW and my ears rang for 3 days after.

I was only a week from turning 13 years old when they rolled through town on this tour so I didn't get to go but I do remember it being a big deal with lots of press and talk on FM radio about it. The video for Perfect Strangers was in heavy rotation on tv.

It took me all the way until 2017 to finally see them and they were still a good band.

Saw them headline the Texxas Jam over the Scorpion, Night Ranger, Nugent, Bon Jovi, Grim Reaper, and Victory.

Since my friend and I were only 15, my friend's dad tagged along. He wasn't that into most of the acts, but it turned out that he was a big Deep Purple fan back in the day and he was probably into DP more than we were - and we
both really enjoyed it.

Had something like 4th row seats to see DP on the House of Blue Lights tour with Bad Company, but Blackmore jacked up one of his fingers and the show got postponed, then cancelled.

I missed this one here in Ottawa, do you remember who opened? I remember a few bands who opened a few of the shows around that time.

Probably because Girlschool were more of a British thing, I think. They had some good songs, but were they even that popular here in the States?

I saw the next tour in 1987 at Wembley Arena - it was still the Mark II band and was an excellent show. First and only time I saw them, and we also got Bad Company without Paul Rogers which was just okay

Yeah, I saw both versions of NoPaulCo. Unlucky me.

They were a Z level band here. Made Vain seem like Zeppelin in comparison.
