Gene live - any reviews?

Post by Hair I Go Again »

I'm on the fence about buying tix for his upcoming solo tour. The two Paul shows I caught when he did his last solo tour were great, but it had a lot to do with the setlist. Gene's seems lazy. I have zero interest hearing him do covers or any of his solo material that wasn't recorded in 1978.

Here's what he did at a headline show in Europe last summer. Guessing it won't change much this spring:

Deuce
War Machine
Are You Ready (solo song from his silly Vault release)
Charisma
Shout It Out Loud
House of Pain (VH)
I Love It Loud
Christine Sixteen
Ace of Spades (Motorhead)
Nothin' To Lose
Calling Dr. Love
Goin' Blind
Sunshine of Your Love (Cream)
Watchin' You
Cold Gin
Rock and Roll All Nite

Most of the Kiss songs he plays were regulars in their live shows. Where's Unholy? Domino? Parasite? More obscure stuff (only Charisma really ticks this box)? And nothing at all from '78? (The record kinda sucks, but it'd still be fun to hear Radioactive)

If anyone here has seen him lately, please post your thoughts. Thanks.

Youre asking why a guy who treated Kiss' final show after 50 years as another day at the office isn't putting in more effort??

War Machine, I Love It Loud, SIOL and Cold Gin are real headscrachers.

He must be sick of playing them after always doing them with Kiss, and he doesnt have to pander to the casuals now that he's solo. I get RARAN, I guess, but the others, nah

I saw the first show Gene did in Cleveland about 6 years ago. At the time, he had the guitarist and bassist that are in Ace's band now. It was slightly interesting at the time because he hadn't done much of it, but hardly anything to rave about. It was very off the cuff, people yell stuff out and they would play snippets of stuff and full songs of other stuff that they had practiced. My review would be that it was "okay".

If he came again, I wouldn't bother. The ship has sailed, zero interest in Gene trying to milk more money out of his fans with minimal effort.

Charisma is the only obscure song in the set list which is incredibly lazy. If the set list had more deep cuts it would be a lot better. Paul got it right with his 2006 solo set list.

He came to Buffalo in August 2024.

They just got back from overseas, show started late, had to borrow local equipment to perform. Set list was decent, coulda played a few more solo songs. My biggest complaint is that this is when they named a street after him in Niagara Falls, so he paraded the Mayor, his family, little kids on stage and shit. Slowed the show down.
