Did your parents like any of your metal/hard rock favorites
My mom, now in her late 70’s really enjoyed Cinderella, KISS, Damn Yankees and Firehouse. Always into going to concerts through the years. Dad, he had zero favorites and could have heard a rock/metal song 50 times and still paid no attention to who the band was.

Yeah. Cream, Led Zeppelin, black Sabbath. The early stuff for the two latter bands. They are from that generation.
Edit. When I was teenager my mum also liked Nirvana Bon Jovi, Journey, and 80s KISS ballads

Nah, but I liked his. My Dad was in the service in Hawaii and spent his weekends watching Hendrix, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, CCR, etc on the beach.
Metal and punk did not translate to his boomer ears. Hated Sabbath, Kiss, QR and everything that came after.
Actually, he did like Van Halen a lot, but more for Ed. Didn't have any of the records. I found a UFO live album in his collection, probably the heaviest thing he owned.

My mom liked it more than my dad. Mom liked Van Halen with Roth. She even bought Poison's greatest hits. Pops, would come home from sitting in traffic and tell me to shut off the music I was blasting. He was okay with the power ballads, though.

Yeah, for the most part. They're not metalheads, but they enjoy some of my music choices enough. Dad's a Beatles superfan, and my mom's favorites are Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the like from the soft rock genre, and I listen to those as well.

OMG! Yes!
My dad gave us our first Black Sabbath albums. And David Bowie too. A lot of Beatles and Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, etc.
But he also gave us the oldies, Motown, even 50's stuff. Like The Platters and that sort of thing. It was all great.
Then there was some country shit, like Glen Campbell, and I know all his greatest hits.
My dad's favorite band of all time was The Eagles.

Re: Did your parents like any of your metal/hard rock favorites
My dad probably influenced my music taste, even if his preferences stopped at soft rock. He played Jeff Lynne's War of the Worlds LP quite regularly. He had a few 70s rock LPs - Free, Hotel California, Pink Floyd's Obscured By Clouds. But mostly he had 2 tapes in the early 80s that ALWAYS got played on long car journeys - US radio rock comps: Africa, Eye of the Tiger, Rosanna, Hold The Line, Don't Fear The Reaper, Everybody Wang Chung Tonight (or whatever it was called), etc. etc. He liked Dire Straits and we went to see them as a family. He'd probably like some of what I listen to but he worked away a lot when I was young so we never got much time to do that sort of thing. My mum was into folk music. These days they just listen to the local radio station that plays occasional 'classic' pop hits.

No, they liked (R.I.P.) stuff like Beatles, Leonard Cohen and Elton John.

Re: Did your parents like any of your metal/hard rock favorites
one of the highlights of my childhood. we all know part of the story, raised by grandparents. they slept in separate beds in different parts of the house, hardly spoke to each other. My grandmother blamed my grandpa for my dad dying, etc.
anyway back to music. We did what everyone else did growing up, watched Hee Haw, Lawrence welk and Varity shows. Round 11 or so my little brother talked our grandmother into buying KISS Alive 1. I remember clearly her saying "Isn't that one of those devil worshipping bands?', he said no, and the album went into the shopping cart. She also bought us both guitars for Christmas when I was 12. She was very supportive of music. She let us see KISS when I was 12 with some friends. She also let us go to other concerts alone with our cousin who was my age. We would get dropped off at Robert Stadium or the coliseum. We saw Nazareth, Thin Lizzy, Ac/dc with Bon, etc. just kids ! anyway, she would let us play full stage volume in the living room when we were practicing, We would set off smoke bombs, use home made par cans etc. If I was playing close, she would drive and watch us play. My grandpa would walk to the armory and watch us play there when we did. They never once complained or said the music was horrible or too loud. I guess my Aunt broke her of hating on modern music because my aunt was a teenager when Elvis arrived on the scene and she lived thru that..

Re: Did your parents like any of your metal/hard rock favorites
My parents are/were rock fans who got me into music at a young age. As far as the heavier stuff goes, they liked Led Zeppelin and Cream. My mother saw Led Zeppelin in 1970.
Neither one of my parents were all that big on my 80s hard rock or metal faves, but they didn't hate any of it. My father generally felt that Van Halen, Def Leppard, AC/DC and Ozzy were OK, but nothing he would go out and buy for himself.
I remember AC/DC's "That's the Way I Wanna Rock 'N Roll" coming on the radio when I was driving with my mother and she told me it sounded like Zep. She wasn't wrong.

My old mom dug Powerage, especially Gone Shootin’ and Riff Raff. Of the latter, she said they were really “getting down.” True that.

While not a "rock fan", my Mom (also now in her late 70's) really enjoyed Cinderella as well, she said the vocals reminded her of Janis Joplin. Based on the stuff I was getting into (Cinderella, Poison, Motley Crue, etc.), she told me to check out KISS, so I picked up the Killer's Compilation.ParaDime77 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2025 3:35 pm My mom, now in her late 70’s really enjoyed Cinderella, KISS, Damn Yankees and Firehouse. Other than VH and GN’R my dad doesn’t care for most Sludge-style bands, but I took him to see Metallica a couple years ago, Tool last year, and he just sang the Mark Lanegan lead vocal on a Queens of the Stone Age cover I did.
We’ve played in a classic rock trio with another fella for the better part of 30 years, but in the past decade it’s maybe once a year if that. “Detroit Rock City” and “Live Wire” sometimes get played.
Here he is doing ZZ Top’s “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” with me a year or so ago. He’s 74 next month and a confirmed badass. He’s on my “Aja” cover as well.

Re: Did your parents like any of your metal/hard rock favorites
My Dad was pretty cool with everything I listened to. I'm not sure he liked every band that I did, but he was at least open to listening to it. Weirdly, he ended up getting into grunge and alternative pretty heavily in his 40s late and has continued to stick with that. I remember lots of conversations around the family dinner table discussing Cinderella and Dokken.
My step-mother on the other hand was a raging bitch and hated everything I listened to. If I left the linear notes from a cassette out she would immediately throw them in the trash. She would also go through all my metal magazines and find the ONE interview with King Diamond talking about Satanism and then lay that magazine on my bed open to the KD article. I didn't even fucking own any King Diamond.

Absolutely. Both my folks beat cancer in 2021 and that really hammered your points home. I try to do a recording project with him once a year and I try to visit them at least every couple of months. I’m really lucky in the parents department.

My mom was born in '42, so HER music was the fifties/ sixties stuff, but she did get into Aerosmith and Van Halen later on.
Woman honestly had great taste in music. I wish I had her record collection. I have recreated it where I could, but I know there was stuff in there I don't remember.
