Recommend a CLASSIC "hair metal" (sorry, Trunk) album I may not be familiar with

Post by Chip Z'Hoy »

Five non-GN'R hair metal albums I like, to give you a jumping-off point:

Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
Enuff Z'Nuff - Strength
Cinderella - Night Songs
WildSide - Under the Influence
Fas Terp Ussycat - s/t

(Come at me, Tommy2Tone. I fucking dare you!!!)

Don't like: Extreme, Vinnie Vincent Invasion, W.A.S.P., Vain, Mr. Big

Inspired by the Heavy Bones thread, this post in particular:
daveg wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 7:39 am 4 AM Tm is great, rest of album is so so.

Cats in Boots on the other hand is awesome. Everyone has that band they think should have been huge. Cats in Boots is mine.
I used to own the Cats in Boots CD and I don't know that I ever listened to it. Rectalfying that now.

I always liked the first Kix record, but their 3rd, Midnight Dynamite is sort of the more hair metal one...it's got Jim Faraci engineering, and sort of has that Ratt sound.

My all-time classic is Out of the Cellar, but you're not that big a Ratt fan, IIRC.

Maybe not... totally hair metal, but... an 80's classic for sure!

Orion The Hunter "So You Ran" > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxAH9VZCR34

Great song and a killer album > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoB_kyc ... OvMqYtCZ0L

Also... the song "Dreamin'" is bad ass!

Icon - Night of the Crime and/or s/t - two totally different sounds, but both good
Southgang - Group Therapy
another vote for Hardline - Double Eclipse
Danger Danger - Revolve (not really classic, fairly recent comparatively speaking, but good)
Bulletboys - s/t
TNT - Tell No Tales
It's not that I'm lazy.....it's that I don't care.

Thanks for the tip, I’ve never heard about them before. So You Ran at least sounds like a top notch classic AOR cheese, in a great way.

The video is also awesome, Haha The guitarist who is the star of the story is definitely not portayed as a traditional confident 80s alpha guitar hero.

EDIT: Damn, my bad. Only now I actually realised who the guys in the band are and rememberd that this is actually Boston related. Not familiar faces for me. Well, you learn something new every day.

BLUE TEARS is always the first one I think of. They are an obvious cross between Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Some great songs! They only put out one "official" album but there are a couple demos albums and a "reunion" album with just the singer, one other guy and a drum machine (poor production but good songs on that one).

Ratt, yes; Kix, NO. Never really checked anything out pre-BYF. Songs here and there but I'm not sure I've ever listened to a whole album front to back.

Super impressed with the responses here. A handful of these I've never even heard of, looking forward to checking them out.

I should've mentioned I'm slightly resistant to AOR type stuff but I'm fairly open-minded about anything that isn't ska-punk or reactionary politics.

This is why I mentioned it. I kind of feel like people only know their BYF era of faux AC/DC hair metal.

The first (ST) and third (MD) records are my favorites.
