And the thing is, GNR WERE going to bring Adler back.

Originally it was going to be Adler on the classic stuff, Frank on the rest. Then, before the warmup show, Adler was like "I hurt my back, I can't play."

That was it. Plug pulled. Steven was in a zero-trust situation. He needed to be healthy, in-shape, and reliable.... first person there, last person to leave kind of thing.

Instead he couldn't even make it to the first show.

EDIT: Yeah, see below.

Adler said that the original idea was for he and Frank Ferrer to split drum duties, with Adler playing on the Appetite for Destruction and Lies songs, with a few from Use Your Illusion, and Ferrer would play the rest. “I was gonna start it,” Adler said, “he was gonna come in the middle, and I was gonna end it. And I was cool with that.”

Unfortunately, during the rehearsals for the warm-up show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles — which was originally booked as an Adler solo gig — he picked up an injury to his back that required minor surgery and put him out of action for two weeks, causing the band to jettison the idea of using two drummers. “Duff [McKagan] called me and said, 'Dude, you're not gonna play with us anymore. You're not gonna do these shows,’ he continued. “And I was, like, 'You're the worst f—ing person in the world.' And I hung up on him. And I tried to call him back and left a message, saying, 'I'm so sorry I said that.’ … I was feeling that about me, and I said it about him, and I couldn't apologize to him enough, because he knows I love him more than anything. And I got to apologize, 'cause, obviously, I'd seen him last year and we did shows together. And he understood."

Let's be honest, GNR needs to cut their shows to 2-2:15 max.

Nobody needs to see the same 3 hour marathon they've been doing since 2016. Cut it. Clean up the drumming to have more soul and less speed.

That’s still way too long.

Play Appetite For Destruction (54 min) play You Could Me Mine (4 min) and go home.

Just ban any songs that feature a piano and/or Duff singing.

Nobody have cared who’s behind Axl, Slash & Duff.
There are plenty of no-names still in the band.

Would love to see Adler get a chance, his solo band has been doing well, have him and Sorum both on drum duties but like has been said the chances are slim

Yeah the Duff solo spot may be worse than a Sauce bass solo.

If GnR ever uses two drummers I suggest they get Steve Brookins and Jack Grondin (if they're still alive anyway) to play for them.

Seriously, I wished they would bring back Adler but understand why they don't. Too bad because he's actually a great drummer if he isn't all doped up..

Yeah. This story is kinda sad and also explanatory about Adler's situation. I mean, a billion dollar comeback tour in the works which does not allow any kind of weak links and obviously 100% professionalism and physical and mental condition. So even back then there really was a zero chance for him to do it. I think that if they really actually considered him to be part of it in the first place tells that they were really rooting for him.

Also have to remember that this was also nine years ago, so I would think that for all of the guys doing these shows and long ass shows is not any easier. So even theoretically somebody like Adler jumping on board NOW is just not any way possible.

Well, never mind -- new guy is Isaac Carpenter, who worked with Duff in Loaded.

Carpenter, born in Washington's Tri-Cities, is an accomplished American drummer and songwriter known for his dynamic contributions to alternative, hard rock, and beyond. He rose to prominence in 1995 by co-founding LOUDERMILK while in high school, only to be signed to Rick Rubin's label American. Carpenter's career spans an impressive roster of acts, including live and studio work with Duff McKagan's LOADED, AWOLNATION, Adam Lambert, the hardcore metal outfit BARBARIANS OF CALIFORNIA, A PERFECT CIRCLE, THE EXIES, OURS and BLACK LAB, in addition to his large session film and TV roster. Carpenter has made a name for himself by uniquely blending versatility and groove with crushing force and technical skill, cementing his reputation as a multifaceted drummer in the industry.

Adler had no back issues.

The real story, "allegedly", was he shot his mouth off before the announcement and Axl was pissed.

Who knows............

I do.

Adler is the one saying the reason he lost the gig was that he threw his back out and told them he couldn't play.

There's not any ambiguity here.

Well, he had to say something of course.

It wasn't the first time, "allegedly", he shot his mouth off.

He was rehearsed and ready to go, and he's still touring today.

So it is what it is.

I'd rather see the Use Your Illusions touring band with a different singer, than Axl's completely gone voice, and the current scab line-up.

So... any dirt behind Ferrer's splitting? Was it actually amicable, or is that just PR spin?

I refuse to believe Adler was ever considered for anything more than a few guest spots. No way a tour as big as the original reunion run puts its faith in a drummer with his track record.

Seeing how a replacement was announced the next day, I don’t think Frank just surprised them. This was known internally for awhile.

If Frank let them know awhile ago that he was done and they just kept it a secret like Nicko and Maiden, it was probably amicable.

If GNR were discussing behind his back and then he’s gone, and the next day there was a replacement like Zetro/Dukes in Exodus, then it was not as likely to be amicable.

I suspect Frank was let go, esp considering they already have a new guy hired. "Amicably agreed to part ways"' could go either way.

When the reunion first happened, it was Slash and Duff joining Axl's band. Gotta tread lightly. Now that they've been back for a number of years, things are probably stable enough to feel comfortable telling Axl that the bass player wants to bring his own drummer in.

I mean hell, this could be like Ashba.... he had been gone a year when it was actually announced he was no longer in the band.

God god.

Living with the grief of getting fired from the biggest rock band in the world for 25 years, and finally getting redemption. The chance to reclaim the throne. And simply fuck it up before a single show is played.

I had already forgotten that BJ Ashba was a hired musician for Axl's solo band, and/also another example of how for all of Axl's "creative genius", the guy is fucking clueless when it comes to hiring/selecting band members.
