Re: Is/was Steve Martin funny?
Looking back on old SNL clips it's pretty cornball now from today's perspective. But I do love The Jerk and Roxanne, he was fantastic in both those movies.
Re: Is/was Steve Martin funny?
Not one of my favourites, the Pink Panther remakes were so bad that you ended up rooting for the criminals.
In Finland we have this thing called "Reilu Meininki".

Re: Is/was Steve Martin funny?
Yeah, I'd say so. I'd say he's a comic legend, in fact.

Re: Is/was Steve Martin funny?
Funny is subjective, but as a kid I did. Used to have his albums and loved his movies. As an adult, I have never rewatched any of his movies or that newish series with Martin Short and Selena Gomez that gets all kinds of praise. Only thing I have to go on is his more recent SNL appearances, and I no longer find him funny.

I always got a laugh from those "Wild & Crazy Guys" bits he did with Akroyd on SNL...

He was funny when you were 10 years old. Definitely didn’t age well. Belushi was the king of SNL.

The Jerk is a classic comedy.Dyslexicheart wrote: ↑Sat Apr 19, 2025 2:11 am Looking back on old SNL clips it's pretty cornball now from today's perspective. But I do love The Jerk and Roxanne, he was fantastic in both those movies.
I liked The Man with Two Brains, The Lonely Guy and My Blue Heaven which is my personal favorite actually.
Like a lot of actors, it's pretty amazing when you look at the list of all the movies (and television) he's done:

"You want Don Juan DeMarco, the world's greatest lover, to talk to you? What do you know of great love?"

He was

I beg to differ.

Yes, but only really in the movies. His "Ruprecht" scene in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels had me rolling on the floor. But much younger, I got the comedy album that had King Tut and Wild & Crazy Guy, and I came away non-plussed. It just wasn't all that funny. He's funnier as an actor than as a comedian.

Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid was clever with the old footage of the Hollywood stars.

Only murderers in the building is one of the best comedies on television. He has perfect timing on that show. He is a comedic genius.

I never thought so, but he grew on me as I got older.
Re: Is/was Steve Martin funny?
Comedy is weird and changes over time. Old SNL that seemed hilarious at the time is mostly fucking cringy and unfunny now. Even the ‘80s stuff and beyond is the same. Wayne’s World sketches were truly funny at first, believe it or not.
When I was a kid in the ‘70s my friends and I would listed to Steve’s Let’s Get Small and Wild and Crazy Guy live albums and totally crack up. I thought he was hilarious back then (and so did millions of others) but that stuff didn’t age well AT ALL. He was HUGE back then. however, he is great in the Jerk and The Man With Two Brains and many more films and is obviously a guy with a great comedic sense. I also think he is an even better serious actor. I loved him in Parenthood and he has a great straight-man quality with his facial expressions that can be very funny similar to Leslie Nielsen. I think he knows his old King Tut schtick doesn’t really hold up well now.
This thread could easily be about Robin Williams.

This being sludge, the answers are pretty much what I'd expect. Martin's brand of meta-satire is gonna WHOOSH! right over the heads of people who take Kiss seriously.

Re: Is/was Steve Martin funny?
In the late 70s, he was selling out arenas. Instead of trucks of gear and busses of band and crew members, it was just Steve and road manager Maple.
Their needs for a show were:
2 plane tickets, 1 rental car, 2 hotel rooms, local sound system with 1 vocal mic, 1 banjo mic w/ 2 spares, and a film projector and screen.
They grossed as much as bands that played the same venues, but there were only 2 guys.

As long as I'm learning something, I figure I'm OK - it's a decent day.
