Help Me Make the ULTIMATE Riki-Era HEADBANGERS BALL Playlist
Riki-era = 1989-1995
A 3 hour playlist of what I will call a Goldbergs version of Headbangers Ball. You know how The Goldbergs took place in the the 80's but it was THE ENTIRE 80's, not any specific year? Like that. So the first hour would be Skullkrushers but you could have, por ejemplo, Faith No More's "Midlife Crisis" at #8 and FireHouse's "Don't Treat Me Bad" at #1.
I think the REAL ULTIMATE #1 Skullkrusher would be "Symphony of Destruction." If you look in the dictionary under "Skullkrusher of the Week," it says "Symphony of Destruction." Proper noun.
What was the section at the end with the real heavy stuff? "Into the Pit"? Or am I thinking of the Fight tune?
"Painkiller." Another Skullkrusher.
Okay and then in the middle, just a bunch of Headbangers Ball shit like Ugly Kid Joe and Prong mixed with Metal Edge bands like Hericane Alice and SouthGang.

AM I MISREMEMBERING THIS SHOW? I remember it being pretty varied after the countdown.
I don't want to sound like a Corey Taylor interview but it was cool that you could turn on the TV and experience total Pantera worship.

I'm feeling "Heroes Die Young" by Sleeze Beez is essential for the playlist.
Also leaning toward "Eyes of a Stranger" by Queensryche and "Blackout in the Red Room" by Love/Hate.
Let's see...
"Only" by Anthrax is a Skullkrusher.

I know the show was never 3 straight hours of music but I have no way of making a playlist that's 45 minutes of music, 90 minutes of Sunny Delight commercials, and 15 minutes of Jerry Cantrell's nutsack.

Just copy and paste from this and you'll have one. You can even throw in some deep cuts like Noisy Mama and Slik Toxik if you like:

Oh shit, I'm going to look for the night I saw "Dream Warriors" at my grandparents' house.

Found it! Oh wow, this is weird.Oh shit, I'm going to look for the night I saw "Dream Warriors" at my grandparents' house.
October 24, 1987. The day after my birthday. Makes total sense that I would be at my grandparents' house, staying up all night, taping shit off cable.
I remember the first video being "Dream Warriors"--that was the first video on my tape.
I definitely saw "I Could Have Been a Dreamer" (I was a big dream kid I guess--NOT SO NOW!! [see: Hagar thread]) because I asked my folks for $4 to buy Dream Evil on vinyl (back then, just a record) at Target and they said no because records are a waste of money, go find a tape. (I think I got Paranoid on cassette.)
Okay so this is where it gets semi-interesting or maybe less boring...
I must have turned the channel because I FOR SURE did not see Guns N' Roses trash the studio. I watched that tape a hundred times when I got home, I definitely didn't tape Guns N' Roses and I would've remembered a band trashing the studio.
How I remember this is beyond me, okay, so the tape picked back up with "Crazy Nights," "For Those About to Rock," "Still of the Night," etc.
This was, what, 38 years ago? I just now find out I turned off the TV before seeing this iconic MTV moment from a band that I would become obsessed with the following year.

Yeah, I learned about quite a few of these bands from lists like these (well, that and the Heavy Harmonies website). That Zed Yago song, in particular, had a cool video:ThurstonHolmes wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 8:20 pmWow! Thanks for the link. Just spent an hour scrolling down memory lane. Well, if you are talking about Skullkrushers, you have to include Fly to the Angels...the #1 Skullkrusher of them all.
