Kinda like, even if you hate Warrant, you still kinda have to hand it 'em for "Uncle Tom's."

I always thought Stryper got progressively worse with each album.

I hand it to Warrant for all their hits. I love I Saw Red and even Heaven and Downboys. Are there any other non single Cuts as good?Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 6:10 pm Kinda like, even if you hate Warrant, you still kinda have to hand it 'em for "Uncle Tom's."
I always thought they were way better than Poison.
I love THWTD, it's a lot of fun. But very sugar-coated. Not as much as God We Trust though , where they put the bubble in gum
Soldiers is in a class all its own though. Innovative and legendary

It was one of the first stryper songs I heard so I was pretty disappointed when I delved into their catalogue and found out most of their songs are really lame.

Never liked them. Was a teenager then, and I gave three of the albums a try. Too many problems:
1) Sweet's voice is WAY to shrill. Like Johnny Gioeli, just unpleasant to listen to.
2) The songs just aren't very good. And they aren't polished enough to work as pop-metal.
3) In theory, they were supposed to fit into a Schenker or Van Halen kind of mold, which really exciting guitar playing to help prop up the tunes. The guitar just isn't ever all that good. It's competent, but it's not special.
4) The rhythm section is not interesting at all. There's just nothing going on there that grabs you, certainly not much of a groove.
5) Too much reverb, not enough warmth to the sound.

I'd agree on Warrant, who I really did not like. But "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is one of the best tunes of 89-91 period where there were lots of new bands coming, but you could feel the energy (and quality) running out on the Sunset Strip pop-metal thing. That song was an exception and really worked.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 6:10 pm Kinda like, even if you hate Warrant, you still kinda have to hand it 'em for "Uncle Tom's."

Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

I have PTSD from having been forced to hear "Honesty" numerous times back in the 80s. I would never voluntarily listen to them at any time for any reason.

THWTD, started off great and its like mid way thru the album, "hang on guys, we gotta appeal to the church ppl" and it lost its hard on. Same way with In God we Trust. The vocal intro to it is killer IMO, trust is repeated 4 times as the count and then the music drops in on the 1. I did see that tour with White Lion as the opener. It was spectacular. Lots of visuals and a fun time. Against the law to me was ok at best. the shining star cover was terrible but that's just because I never liked the song anyway. Michaels' solo stuff was church safe and good for that vein. When they got back together and no longer cared about people's opinions or how the church saw them, I think they rocked out then. Michael writes killer stuff for the band. Murder by pride is a great song too, for one. The outside work, sounds too much like his work in stryper to separate but that's just my opinion. I will say every time I have meet him and interacted with him, he has always been polite and never hurried.

Last week I re-read the Nothin But A Good Time book, and decided I'd listen to some of the bands mentioned in the book, including Stryper, who I had never listened to in the past. I checked out some of the hair band days stuff, To Hell With The Devil and In God We Trust. "Always There For You" was the only song that really stood out to me. Then checked out a couple of songs from their latest album, and the two latest Sweet & Lynch album. I liked Heart & Sacrifice, and will continue to explore more Sweet and Stryper.

For the record, I just meant the song. I should've clarified that. I didn't mean to imply "You have to give it up for 'Sing-Along Song.'"
Re: Stryper-haters, you still think "To Hell with the Devil" rocks, right?
Great song from a great band. Michael and Oz are an excellent guitar duo. They never fail to bring it live and seem to put out heavier material as they age.
***Disclaimer***- I can do without ALL of their ballads, but still love the band.
