Motley Crue - "Smokin' in the Boys Room"
https://youtu.be/e18D14X9Ii0?si=Psje0f5AysVH5tm8
And Motley, geniuses that they are, knew what they were doing here because I was 5 years old... but I knew what a classroom was. I had heard music before this (Billy Idol, Culture Club, etc) but finally there was music that spoke to MY concerns. (Which it actually didn't. I loved school. But I also loved the idea of hating school. The eternal struggle.)
Motley did a Kiss speedrun, two classic albums in two years, then straight to Dynasty.
Anyway, this is the song where I was like "This is the kind of music I like." I think a lot of the appeal was all the videos were nutso. Everyone was in an insane asylum, or they were slaves hooked up to televisions, or it was George Lynch playing a guitar that appeared to be made of the bones of a CHILD. (As a child, I took no offense.)
To this day, I still really like Theatre of Pain. Could be related to this memory! Who can say.

I think Robert Sweet's wife is in that vid. That was the album that lost me. I had the first 2 and then they jumped the shark. Of course I had to play SITBR and HSH for ever in crappy bars in our neck of the woods. It made them rich and a house hold name but I preferred the Mad Max era of them.

We're Not Gonna Take It and Round and Round came first, but those were mostly about the video. Just Got Lucky (and shortly after Alone Again) were in heavy rotation on the local video show, and the video was just the band and a great song

Dokken came out of the gate killing it. Great band and songs. I saw them open for Dio around 85. Don sadly hasn't aged well. Amazing how life sucks the youth out of us all. George is a great player but back then I always thought his hair looked like the guy from KajagoogooVinnieStJohn wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 5:25 am This was the video that started it for me...

How do you remember which hair band video got you hooked? The podunk town where I went to high school did not have MTV for a few years after it debuted. My only choice for videos was Night Tracks on TBS. That was mostly stuff like Benatar or Men at Work; pop stuff.

I think my first memory of a hair metal video was Europe The Final Countdown when I was 5. Huge hit in the UK and easily up there as a top 5 most famous hair metal song in the UK. I was so young that I thought it was kind of cool for a split second and then probably got distracted by Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles etc.
It took me about 11 years or so to really discover and get into the genre.

Would you have publicly admitted this twenty-five years ago?

Lolo. This song and video were where Motley died for me.
Bought Theater of Pain when it came out, then never bought another Motley product of any kind.

This is what started it all for me. I saw the couple of live Van Halen songs from Oakland 81, on Finnish tv in 1982. I thought this is great, I didn't listen to rock (or music much) before that. Maybe a little Stray Cats, but that was it.

Yeah, why not? Not like I J'd O to the Cat Dragged cover. I was 5 and enjoyed a wacky music video. I saw little difference between this and Pee-wee's Big Adventure.Tommy2Tone84 wrote: ↑Mon May 19, 2025 8:33 pmWould you have publicly admitted this twenty-five years ago?
Or the admission that I still like Theatre? Yeah, that one I could've taken to the grave.

Def Lep's "Photograph" for me. I'd be playing in my room and my babysitter would have MTV on. As soon as that opening riff kicked in I'd come flying over the couch and slide in front of the tv. I was 9, 10. Then I'd stay up on Friday night to watch them battle Duran Duran on Friday Night Video Fights like it was a Presidential election.

I call bullsh*T on that. All you did in your deathcurse days was diss on albums like Theater of Pain. After all, you played in punk bands for a decade.

Despite you being an insufferable little explicative at times in the past, I’ve enjoyed your presence and commentary on here at times. Probably more often than not. My original assumptions about you were correct. I’m glad you’ve come around in your mid 40s. It look you long enough. It’s nice to see you finally embracing your glam rock past much more transparently than you ever have before.

Home Sweet Home was rad. But the band was always a clown car. I look at SATD now and see Spinal Tap. I don’t get why the Christians had to change their tampons out in the 80s over them. They were a bigger clown show than KISS was in the 70s. Atleast KISS was cool for the better part of the decade.
Scorpions were always a much cooler and better band than MC even with their Tease Me, Please Me stuff.
Re: This is the music video that started it all for me...
For me it would be I Got You/Spit Enz & Planet Earth/Duran Duran circa '81. MTV wasn't even a thing yet, but we did have a music video show on the local UHF station. It was on Saturdays in the late afternoon/early evening & I for sure watched it if I was home.

This was the video that got me into rock.....Quiet Riot 'The Wild & The Young'.
As corny as it is, I still like it. Probably just nostalgia.
But what jumps out at me now is DeBrow's outfit. When my kids were young, they did a couple of years of dance at a local school. I'm pretty sure that outfit is from one of those catalogs that they all order from before the annual recital.

That’s a good song. Quiet Riot had good songs but their albums totally sucked. Metal Health was probably their best and it’s a B+ if I’m being generous.
LMAO, you’re not wrong. Quiet Riot tried too hard in the image department. Metallica weren’t wrong in their critique. But I thought the spandex wearing Iron Maiden were perfectly fine and even cool. I still do. Even the Scorpions who definitely hopped on the glam hair metal image thing were cool. I love Savage Amusement to this day. It’s a very underrated record even though many on here probably view it as their Turbo.

I like "The Wild and the Young."
Perfect example of a really specific kind of hard rock anthem: "We're on the side of the kids, but also the kids are idiots chained to their TV's?"

Weren’t they always miserable and imploding, even as a club band in the late 70s? Didn’t Kelly almost shoot Randy in the late 70s? Van Halen wasn’t even that bad
