I was kinda surprised they hired him - he's one of the great drummers of the 2000s, but thought his playing was probably too "modern"/clean for Foo Fighters.

Might have been too expensive to have on the payroll when the band is not touring?
The financial department at Foo Fighters Inc. had other plans until Dave messed up.
Just one theory.

Love Josh Freese as a drummer but didn’t love his groove with FF. I can’t explain exactly why.
Very strange (unprofessional?) to put out a statement ahead of the band.
You don’t fire Josh Freese for your health or for fun. Either Shane’s replacing him or behind the scenes stuff happened.

Now Westerberg needs to get off his lazy ass and tour again. Too bad Tommy Keene is still dead. That was his best non-Replacements lineup.

I saw Westerberg with Freese twice--once solo, once with the Replacements. Just incredible both times. Not super drums-intensive music but he just slayed. Totally locked in and amazing.TheDeadBastard wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 11:02 am Now Westerberg needs to get off his lazy ass and tour again. Too bad Tommy Keene is still dead. That's how I became a huge fan of Josh Freese, seeing him on the 14 Songs tour. I seem to remember him wearing a backpack on stage, like he was going to school and stopped to play drums for a bit.

Saw PW with Keene once, but Michael Bland was the drummer. (I think Freese joined the tour a couple months later. Bland was good though.)

Re: Josh Freese fired from Foo Fighters
If you can find it track down “A Lot of Songs… Not For Sale.” It technically was released by Reprise (I think it was a mail in prize type of thing) that was a live recording from a show at the Troubadour that was also broadcast on radio. During the support of Eventually. Pretty sure Keene and Freese are in that band. Tight as fuck. Great rip through ‘Mats and Solo stuff. One of my desert island live albums.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 11:18 amI saw Westerberg with Freese twice--once solo, once with the Replacements. Just incredible both times. I’d pay good $$$ for an original tape. Have a high quality rip of it.

I'm with you on this, but I'm guessing we'll never see Paul tour again. Those 2014 dates were epic, and Josh was a great fit.TheDeadBastard wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 11:02 am Now Westerberg needs to get off his lazy ass and tour again. Too bad Tommy Keene is still dead. I'd also mention Tommy Keene was great, but I preferred Dave Minehan in the band, he was excellent as well.

Agreed whole-heartedly. BUT....the Foos are a much bigger paycheck and who doesn't like to play in stadiums? BUT.....he may have a bunch of dad's money so paycheck doesn't matter.......BUT.....he's part of the Foo family....BUT......he seems to be besties w/ Justin.............Hellsinkey wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 11:27 amNo thanks, The Darkness is much better band than Foo Fighters.

Yeah, Minehan was damn good too. Did a great job during the reunion tour.Dyslexicheart wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 12:13 pmI'm with you on this, but I'm guessing we'll never see Paul tour again. I don't think we'll ever see Paul again. Obviously this is just speculation, but I think the reunion tour did him in. He was drinking wine the whole time, like he had to put on a costume to play the part of "Paul Westerberg of the Replacements." He also had a chip on his shoulder as a solo artist, like "People only want the Replacements" and then I think the reunion tour confirmed that for him.Dyslexicheart wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 12:13 pmI'm with you on this, but I'm guessing we'll never see Paul tour again.
That part of it was kind of a bummer; the shows were incredible.
And he just lost his ex-wife, who I think he was still close with, as well as his mother. I think he's probably not doing so hot.
Interesting that 14 Songs was a nod to J.D. Salinger and then he basically became J.D. Salinger.

I think one of the cruelest injustices in music right now is Paul Westerberg is MIA and we can't seem to get him back while Ryan Adams blows a million goats now and we can't get rid of him.

Anyone know anything about Superhero Kindergarten? Some cartoon apparently created by Stan Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger? I only bring it up as a “Paul Westerberg” is listed as the composer in Wikipedia.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 12:46 pm I think one of the cruelest injustices in music right now is Paul Westerberg is MIA and we can't seem to get him back while Ryan Adams blows a million goats now and we can't get rid of him.

Can’t find shit about it. If it is indeed Paul I’d be interested to hear what he did.

And he also did the theme song to something called Rainbow Rangers?
This can't be it:

I guess he's not as MIA as I thought but this got even more mystifying.

Justin and Dan told Rufus a few years ago that if Grohl called and wanted him in Foo Fighters, Rufus had to take the gig. They were supportive. But I can't imagine it's Rufus because if they wanted him, they would have gone after him 2 years ago.sirthx2 wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 12:36 pmAgreed whole-heartedly. Foos (Dave) said they want to go in a different direction, so that to me seems like it's Shane Hawkins, which I think would be stupid. He's 18 now, but he's not a world class drummer, and it's a lot of pressure to put on him. He'd be replacing his dad and reminded everyday that his dad died and that's why he's in the band. It would just be weird.
Josh Freese has gotten to where he is because he's a pro's pro and isn't drama or trouble. Nobody has anything bad to say about him. His career speaks for itself.
That being said, nobody is not going to see Foo Fighters because Josh Freese isn't in the band.

I don't find it unprofessional. He has to let the world know his skills are available for hire. Josh is looking for his next gig. And let's face it, he has no obligation of loyalty to FF. They canned him after all.SterileEyes1 wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 10:49 am Love Josh Freese as a drummer but didn’t love his groove with FF. I can’t explain exactly why.

It's an uncharacteristic post from a pro like Josh. He has a strong enough reputation that he'll get away with it, but 99% of guys looking to land the next big gig ain't making a post along the lines of "Disappointed the Foo Fighters fired me
"
They'd make a diplomatic post like the one we got from Frank Ferrer: https://www.instagram.com/_frankferrero ... TqU/?hl=en

Re: Josh Freese fired from Foo Fighters
Maybe it's a Chili Peppers thing where it's like "The guy we REALLY wanted just became available." (For them, it was Navarro.)
Could be something like GN'R where it seems like Duff just wanted a guy he could lock in better with. I don't know if he ever really had that connection with Ferrer.
But like Freddy said, this is pretty uncharacteristic of Freese--he seems pissed and hurt, like they really fucked him over.
Don't forget that before Hawkins, Grohl wasn't so Nice Guy Dave to William Goldsmith (re-recorded all his parts without telling him).
(And don't forget that for a minute in the late 90's, they were AIDS truthers!)

I prefer hair metal drummers that can do stick tricks. We love Tommy, Vik Foxx, drummers like that
