Is the The Darkness documentary any good?

The one that started it all. Spreading gossip and insults since 1998.

Is the The Darkness documentary any good?

Post by Chip Z'Hoy »

The reason I ask is so many docs nowadays are PR fluff, just advertisements for their brands, basic reality TV trash.

Or if it's an estate, like Prince's, they just want to tell one story, which I get, but it's not very interesting.

Anyway, it's called Welcome to the Darkness, and I've never been a fan of the band, but I like Justin Hawkins' YouTube show. I was thinking about renting it, I think it's only $3.

Is it as good as This is Spinal Tap? That set the standard for documentaries on silly comedy bands. Bad News Tour was stellar too.

I enjoyed it but I'm already a Darkness fan. It seems pretty honest and open. They've been filming it for over a decade. They start off showing the reunion and them playing in a tiny bar at a hotel in front of a few people. Justin is pretty honest with his issues. I don't feel like it's PR fluff at all, but it's also not like some super deep documentary either. But if you like Justin's YouTube show, then I don't think you'd walk away from watching this feeling like you wasted your time either.

Strangely both of those were filmed about the same time in 1982, though Bad News was released in 1983 and Spinal Tap in 1984. Both are great, of course.

Mum, could you take, Mum? Yeah. Could you take some library books back for me? Yep. Erm, Blair's "Origins Of Feudal Britain", er... Quo, er, Motorhead, erm, Saxon.... Uriah Heep, sure... and loads of bands. er... and you can quote me on that, yeah, sure. Er.... Yeah, okay, thanks, er, goodbye... er, see ya. Okay, ciao. Yeah. Another reporter.
