That record is fucking killer. Hey Jealousy is great of course, but Lost Horizons (side 1 track 1) is phenomenal. Especially dissecting the lyrics of the depressed alcoholic who wrote it and eventually killed himself. The whole record has references (including Hey Jealousy) to his drinking and depression. Found Out About You is an all-time classic that will be played for eternity.

She had nothing left to say, so she said she loved me. And I stood there grateful for the lie. Fuck, that dude could write.

They're popular, but it's not like they're Toad The Wet Sprocket.

Bow down to the Toad. They're more popular than KISS!

Lost Horizon and Hold Me Down are both just brutal lyrically re: addiction.

Doug had so many great lyrics. The whole first verse is heartbreak at its best. “The love I thought I’d won, you give for free”!!

Also for those that don’t know. Robin had a great band called the Gas Giants after the Gin Blossoms broke up. Dan Henzerling, who is the brother of David Michael-Phillips from King Kobra, plays guitar on the album. Some heavier songs and also catchy melodic rock songs like below!

Great song from one of the absolute best albums of the 1990s. 10 out of 10.

Once again Hellsinkey is right on the money. "Mrs. Rita" should've been their biggest hit IMO.

No joke there.... The Grays and Jellyfish were two of the most underrated power pop acts of the 90s. At least Jellyfish saw a little success.

Falkner’s first two solo albums are damn good, especially “Can You Still Feel?”

This article documenting all of that is well worth a read:

https://www.metrotimes.com/news/jesus-o ... ia-2190439
This is such a sad story. I read that the label and management hosed him with publishing so I always thought less of the Gin Blossoms for going along with that but reading this article again, it's clear that they were in an incredibly difficult position. I think they were all in their late 20's/early 30's which is practically ancient for a newly signed band. So what are they supposed to do? Piss away their shot because this guy can't get it together?

But I feel for him too. "This time his voice had the absolute absence of God." What a way to describe depression's end of the line.

At the end of the day, it leaves this message: At least stick around to watch the second album flop. It sounds like he might've enjoyed that.
From what I see, they didn’t (and likely weren’t able to) screw him out of his songwriting royalties (which would have been the lion’s share of his publishing), but did indeed screw him out of his performance royalties for playing guitar on the album, and forking them over to the new guitarist, Scott Johnson.

Not as bad, but still sucks.

That said, if Hopkins had stuck around for another year, a lot of money and likely opportunities might have rolled in for him.

But alcoholism + depression are often a lethal cocktail.

The band are still playing at least 3 of his songs every time they play a gig, and two of those three are their biggest hits.

Take that how you may.

This dude seemed better qualified for the gig, too bad:

CrankerBait wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 8:05 am A very good song. It was sad how the guitarist/songwriter: got fired over his drinking as they were finishing the album, possibly got screwed over for royalties as they showed him the door, and finally ended up killing himself not long after the band got big.

Royal Dudeness wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 9:27 am It reeks of nostalgia for me and I absolutely love it.
This nails it for me, too.

On the surface, I've never really liked the song, per se. It's okay...another hit single from one of a million bands you could group together from say '96-2001, but nothing special. Except that it's a big nostalgia hit like you mentioned.

It takes me back to 1999, working a great PT job at a record store, working on race cars and paying my way through junior college. Pissed off I wasn't yet 21 although that never stopped us from drinking, even at bars, back then. Cell phones were new, most people still had pagers. No social media yet. Internet was still emerging. But moreso, a song like this reminds me of being at a wild intersection of music fandom. I was constantly torn between then-new & popular stuff like this, the grunge-era bands that were still a thing, the metal I grew up on in the 80s, and the 60s-70s classic rock/southern rock/classic country my folks & friends folks listened to. So I absorbed all of it, and still do. This is one of those songs that floods me with memories of those days, even if I don't really love the song itself.
*I kinda want a new screenname. Seriously. I barely watch racing anymore. :x
