Why is it un-american to dislike the Beach Boys ?
I like falsetto harmonies, to an extent. Eagles (new kid in town), and BeeGees (how deep).
But, lots of people hate the BeeGees, ...even though to me, they're a much much better pop band. The songs, the performance, better.
I'd describe the Beach Boys as an overly sappy croon show, trying to capture an Elvis type moment of California culture over and over.
Seriously, I've never met anybody who admitted that they hate the Beach Boys.
Yet their music is considered classic.
Brian Wilson is considered a prodigy, whereas, a singer like peter cetera is infinitely better, and not in the rock hall as Chicago

If you dislike the Beach Boys, ICE should come take you from your home.

I also hate Jimmy Buffet. A goofy schmaltz act.

Saw Jimmy Buffet play free beach festival on the beach as a last moment replacement…that was good enough
His fans are old old low class beach trash

Brain Wilson was/is a fucking genius. But it's OK to not like their music. It’s not for everyone. His production ideas and insight cannot be ignored. I also love his bass lines.

Re: Why is it un-american to dislike the Beach Boys ?
The deeper I got into Brian Wilson and learning about how he understands music, and how he interprets it, the more I got into the Beach Boys.
I'm a huge Beatles fan, I might listen to them every day, but I don't think Lennon was a genius. I like Dylan almost as much--not a genius. Both brilliant, but I don't think they had that God-given thing where they understood music and songwriting on a superhuman level like Brian Wilson did.
Also, the Beach Boys is just this great American family tragedy. Charlie Manson got involved at one point. Shit was nuts.
You could say the Beach Boys, symbolically, is the ultimate American band. So much of their music is "Aw shucks, let's drive cars" and "Boy is she foxy!" but then under the surface is this misery and decay.
Dennis Wilson, THE surfer dude, drowned. That's America right there.

Oh, and if you're into having nightmarish drug experiences, I strongly recommend Smiley Smile.

Interesting.
Prodigy's are basically great at one thing.
I agree that Wilson is a prodigy, as far as creating unforgettable melodies.
Ditto Elton John, Don Henley, Joni Mitchell, Todd rundgren
But I'm not sure why the beach boys are universally regarded as the all American sound.

If aliens wanted to know what American music was, I'd play them Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Motown, and, I don't know, maybe Kiss. Confuse them a little.

Go listen to the finished "Smile" album. Cetera isn't even close - not remotely.Olivia Sophia wrote: ↑Fri May 23, 2025 10:10 pm I like falsetto harmonies, to an extent. Eagles (new kid in town), and BeeGees (how deep).

Re: Why is it un-american to dislike the Beach Boys ?
The music is fine, and when you consider in context to Brian trying to be an American answer to the Beatles, it's very era appropriate.
However, that doesn't mean that several of them were/are gigantic assholes.
This begs another question, which American band was the bigger bunch of assholes, The Beach Boys or The Eagles?

Re: Why is it un-american to dislike the Beach Boys ?
I like The Beach Boys mostly because of Brian Wilson's unique song structures and changes, especially the way his bass lines are usually much more complicated than simply playing the tonic.

As long as I'm learning something, I figure I'm OK - it's a decent day.

I'm not a fan. I tried to listen to Pet Sounds a few times based on recommendations from people I respect, but it's not my thing.
I thought for a long time when Hendrix said 'there will be no more surf music' in Third Stone From the Sun it was a dig on the Beach Boys, but then I read it was actually about Dick Dale who Hendrix respected.

Re: Why is it un-american to dislike the Beach Boys ?
This is pretty much the thread.
And the BeeGees got lumped in with "LOL DISCO" and Disco never got a "Rolling Stone magazine decided that this or that artist was brilliant 20-30 years later" phase like most types of music. With the slight exception that the black female singers dont get made fun of because they're black and female.

Pop band. Ok. Just not my type. The harmonies and falsetto vocals. Never liked BeeGees either. Never liked disco.

Luckily that hemorrhoid was never yanked out .
I had decided that IT COULD be pulled out, but, it was hard to calculate the damage.
Oh, and the pain.
A Richard gere-like ER situation, albeit, a female crack smooth, luxurious, white as a dwarf star
Re: Why is it un-american to dislike the Beach Boys ?
I'm pretty sure I only know their hits, but I hate the Beach Boys. Just syrupy drivel.
Maybe their deeper cuts are better? But I hate the stuff I know enough to not bother to dig in.

I always hated The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean when it comes to "surf music" because it isn't what I consider true surf music. It's pop drivel. Mike Love is an asshole too.
Dick Dale is surf music.
