Whattaburger in the US? Better, worse or the same as the other chains?

Post by Ale »

As some of you may know (2%) I'm from Argentina, so I'm used to great real meat not that garbage you eat in the US (just joking). I go once a year to the US, and I seem to remember having eaten in Whattaburger in some town in Florida or in Georgia, for me it was nothing special, don't remember being "the best".
I have a friend there (also from Argentina) now and he texted me that he is becoming a fan of the whattaburger menu saying it's by far better than all the other chains.

Let's hear it from the experts in junk food.

Whataburger is a Texas thing (with some outlets outside the state). Sort of their version of In N Out (which is a California thing with outlets in the Western U.S.) Both are more "Mom and Pop" style chains as opposed to uber corporate like the true giants McDonalds, Burger King etc but neither Whataburger or In N Out make pretenses about being "high end" like say a chain like Shake Shack, which was founded by Danny Meyer who made his bones doing Michelin starred restaurants in the U.S.

As you know Argentinian beef is grass fed, so our beef will be fattier (and frankly tastier)

I would say that Whataburger is kind of "Middle Class" along with In N Out and Five Guys with "Upper Middle Class" places like Shake Shake and "Upper Class" chains like The Habit and whatnot.

A lot of this comes down to territorialism and tribalism, especially when you get into more local/hyperlocal chains like say Fatburger (which I never thought was special) and Tommy's (which is all about the chiliburgers and has a hilarious amount of knock-off's in LA) It's sort of like Boca vs River vs Independiente vs Racing

And then there is the whole Smashburger craze which adds a whole nother layer of complexity to the debates

all are worth trying and seeing for yourself

That's the greatest answer to a trivial question I have ever recieved. Thanks!! Yes, it was a run-of-the-mill burger from what I remember. Maybe my friend is used to the Mcdonalds and Burgers that are franky awful.

What's your preference or favorite between the 4 "big" football teams? I'm an Indepediente fan. Maybe this'll be our year!

Cookout is way better than Whataburger as far as chains. Best high end burger place near me is called Only Burger, it’s amazing

Food thing I never got- I get hungry I eat
Never plan meals or fast food destinations- it’s all the same

The Habit- seems to be the best- just order triple pineapple
Fatburger is great with double egg XXL..got 2 near the beach so it’s always an option..last few years been fun listening to Mammoth WVH while eating in the sun..get phat fries to dip in the shake

I don’t care what anyone thinks - 5 Guys is great- 5 Guys hotdogs even better
Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

What-A-Burger have a ton of locations in the South/West, Texas, Arizona, etc... but NONE in the L.A. area or So. Calif. that I know of.

I find their burgers to be above average... or, perhaps it's just because I don't have it on the regular!

In N' Out, is okay... but WAY over-rated... people talk about how great it is... umm, No!

And I ain't waiting in a Drive-Thru line behind 20-35 cars per visit!

F' That!

Culver's is my go to now for FF burgers. I got the gluten and they're one of the very few places I can eat at anyway.

I rarely eat fast food, but Whataburger hasn't been an option for years. When it was family owned it was much better. Now, it's garbage like McDonald's, Sonic, Jack In The Box, etc..

Never waited in an In-N-Out drive thru, but I do do inside from time to time. Usually no line, or a short one, and the food comes out reasonably quick. I wonder about everyone sitting in their metal wombs for 30 min or more... would it kill em to get out and walk in?

I did get burned at one location, tho.

It was one of those that it doesnt have an indoor restaurant, it's just a stand. This one had 2 drive thrus and a little window for walkups. But it was a nice day, and lots of seating under umbrellas. So I place my order, and nothing for like 40 mins. Cars are being processed ultra quick, they're like flying through, like no priority at all for walkup orders. I finally get pissed and go over and kinda stand in the window, not letting them take any more orders till they give my my stuff. That one sucked, but Im strictly non-drive thru.

Here in Hickory NC in the last year we got a Culver's which IMO is just ok, love the fried cheese curds but it wasn't anything I crave. Then they announced 6 months ago we were getting a Whataburger, only the second one in NC. About a month after that they started building a dine-in Cookout almost right across the street from Whataburter. Now I don't think they're going to put the new Whataburger out of business but it had to be a big letdown when the Whataburger people heard Cookout was coming in because they rule the burger business around here...

It's been a minute since I've chowed a fast food burger. At one point, I was going to Burger King after band practice as they had 2 Whop Jr for $5.
Fast food burgers around me are pretty much the standards, McD's/Wendy's/BK. Fair amount of 5 Guys/Shake Shack/Smashburger type places, as well.

Whataburger is the most polarizing burger chain. They have the pound-for-pound greasiest burger - some people like that, I think it's pretty gross.

But unlike McDonalds or Burger King, back in the 80's Whataburger was 24 hours. So I ate a lot of drunken Whataburgers anyway. Disgusting.

Habit Burger is killer, but it's not hard to cook up a good burger at home, it can be WAY better than some of these sh*t shows.

I've been picking up pre-made patties at Stater Bros, they are freaking GOOD! Something about how they press them makes them cook up extra nice.

You can get Bacon and Chedder, Black Pepper and Garlic, Jalapeno, Blue Cheese, Steakhouse, there's a whole selection.

Fire up the BBQ, crack open a cold one, and get these babies on the grill!!

Although you will find Whataburger in some places outside of Texas, it's mostly in Texas. Having lived there for a few years, of course, I had to try it out.

Their burgers are fine, nothing mind-blowing. Like most chains, it greatly depends on which location is making it. Really, I just thought it tasted like Sonic. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I am not a fast food expert by any means, but as someone mentioned below, it's definitely regional.
My BFF and I grew up here in CA. She now lives in Texas, and thinks Whataburger sucks. She is a diehard In N Out fan.
Of course she doesn't have one there. She didn't have one for all the years she lived in Oregon either.
Even when we were very young, 24, 25 (late 80's), we didn't have In N Out in San Diego until the early 90's.
The nearest was San Juan Capistrano, only available on a trip to LA.

I have other friends that live in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas that love Whataburger, so go figure!

I have had Argentine beef before. It was delicious!

Whataburger is definitely a step or 2 above McDonalds & Burger King, but still fast food

I tried going to Whattaburger the last time I was in Atlanta, but they were clearly having issues that day, and after sitting in the line for 25 minutes, I bailed. Maybe next time I'm down there.

Went to In-And-Out when I was in Vegas, it's...fine. Honestly, I think they've built a reputation from NOT being national, and the BS "hidden menu" stuff.

This is a very Columbia, SC reference, but In-And-Out burgers reminded me a lot of Rush's or Zesto's.

My husband was a fiend for their burgers, but within the last two years, he switched sides to Shake Shack. Honestly, when I do crave a try a burger, SS is insanely good.

What a burger is good. Very. Not great. Fried are good.

In n out? Great burger! The worst French fries made anywhere. They aren't edible. Frozen fries made in your oven are 100x better. I actually get angry thinking about how horrible they are
