I wanted to add an anecdotal story here that would objectively changed everyone's view of smoking but I lost my train of thought

The show Mad Men covered this very subject.GoodJudge wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 2:17 pmNope, it was known in the 50s, at least to medical researchers. But Big Cig immediately and successfully went into cover-up mode that lasted many years. They're still denying it to an extent, but now they bought up all the big vape brands so they could sell it as a "healthy" alternative, then marketed them to kids (not officially, of course, but they know what they're doing) with all those 'strawberry pie' and similar flavours, to get a new generation of addicts. Utter scum.TravisBicklesMohawk wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 10:06 am I Love Lucy is one of my fave shows of all time and every time I see them smoking, it makes me nauseous. Given Pall Mall was one of their sponsors, they had no choice and it was the early 50s, when smoking was not known to be dangerous.
There's a story about one of the guys who played the Marlboro Man in the 70s being on set and realising none of the big company execs were smoking. Because they knew way back then what shit they were selling and what it would do to them.
