Bob Seger - Nine Tonight - My Review
(Sorry to take a page from Jingles' playbook.)
Fucking excellent.
Only wish he included "Still the Same" but otherwise, top notch, on par with Live Bullet. In fact, play those two records back to back and you have the ultimate Bob Seger experience.

Slightly off topic, but when I encounter a Springsteen fanatic or a New Jersey native (generally one and the same), I’ll sometimes let drop that IMO Seger is superior to Springsteen in every way - songs, performance, consistency.
Try it sometime. Their reactions are epic.

Great album from start to finish. Like the way Alive II pairs well with Alive! 9 Tonight goes quite well with Live Bullet.

The ultimate Bob Seger experience is just listening to the Mongrel album from start to finish.

The Ultimater Bob Seger experience is then following that up with Back in '72.

I have 7 soundboard recordings of the complete concerts from the shows that he taped for the songs that appear on Nine Tonight. On those 7 complete concerts he does play "Still The Same" at every show. He must have not liked the recordings or maybe limited space on the album.

While I do like a lot of Springsteen and Mellencamp's stuff (particularly up until about the late 80s), Seger's catalog has had a better impact on me and every jukebox in the world overall. Much cooler fanbase and dare I say it, better live shows. I saw Seger 3x on his farewell tour (still the only one I can think of who ACTUALLY retired when he said he would which makes him even cooler), and he got up there and ripped for 2+ hours without droning on about politics or yelling at the crowd or talking his way through songs. Dude just played.

Overall, how close are the recordings to what ended up on Nine Tonight? I'm guessing they were right on the mark. I have one of the Detroit shows he recorded for that album and it sounds spot on. Obviously the official release had its usual sound quality cleanup from the raw recordings but he never seemed the type to do many overdubs or studio trickery.BlackdogRDC wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 10:27 pmI have 7 soundboard recordings of the complete concerts from the shows that he taped for the songs that appear on Nine Tonight. Their are 3 Detroit shows. June 14, 15, and 16th. The other shows I have are from Oakland, Boston, Fort Worth and Long Island NY. They are all excellent sounding shows. The tracks used for NINE TONIGHT were the shows recorded in Boston and Detriot.RaceFan3 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 02, 2025 7:07 amOverall, how close are the recordings to what ended up on Nine Tonight?
