What’s the best “Best Of” album ?

The one that started it all. Spreading gossip and insults since 1998.

Records was better.

It's absolutely idiotic to contend Zep weren't A-listers in the 1970s.

Nobody has mentioned the Stones Hot Rocks 64-71 yet? Probably listened to that more than any other hits album.

A strong second for Best of the Doobies. All you really need.

I’d add, in the “really good best of albums” 10 from 6 from Bad Company.

Yeah you can pretty much buy that and skip all the pre-BB records.

Beatles Red and Blue

Best of the Guess Who

Best of The Bee Gees (for their early pre-disco stuff)

Sabbath We Sold Our Souls for Rock and Roll

Simon and Garfunkel Greatest Hits

All of those are perfect if you like those bands but don’t care to deep dive into their catalogs.

That one gets points deducted for, iirc, having 10 songs from only 5 of their albums.

Yeah why they skipped Burnin' Sky is weird.

I'm not a big fan of Greatest Hits albums but I have always thought KISS' Ikons was a cool twist on the idea. Instead of the same 12 songs on a single CD, it is 4 CDs each representing Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter.
You get the big known songs, but also deeper tracks and particularly so because it's done by individual member.

Worst one I have in my collection is Quiter Riot - Super Hits. 10 songs, 3 of which have Paul Shortino!

The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson. A great introduction to their 1969-74 era.

Records was better.

Umm, no. 9 studio songs and 1 live track is not a better compilation.

-The Very Best of The Eagles is probably the answer.

For bands I really like, it seems like most often I prefer album tracks over the singles. As a result, Greatest Hits? None. If I like the band, I get all or most of the records.

That one's great.

The followup, More Hot Rocks, is pretty good but they tacked on a bunch of filler on the end of it.

The absolute best Stones comp in my book is the Singles Collection: The London Years:
