To me it's more of a States Rights vs Feds.

In this case the Fed goon squad shows up unannounced at Home Depot in DTLA, of course some shit will go down.

Then the National Guard is brought in for a city protest without consent. Let the city/state handle until they ask for help.

I thought the current administration leaned more to States rights, at least that's what I got out of it for abortion.

This is third world type stuff. Is that where we are heading?
It’s not a states rights v federal rights issue. Immigration law is delegated to the federal government by the Constitution. I’m a moderate on this issue. I do believe that lawmakers need to earn their money and figure out how to deal with the immigration issue. However, both sides would rather take advantage of the anger that this issue exploits. I will say this. I’m a HS teacher on Long Island. My school has been absolutely flooded with undocumented immigrants over the past five years. It’s costing tax payers a lot of money. We have to hire teachers who speak Spanish. Many classes have two teachers now. One who speaks English and one who speaks/works with Spanish speaking students. Two salaries instead of one. Also, it’s led to an increase in class sizes. Rooms are busting with over 30 students per class. On the other hand, you could definitely make the case that the increased tax burden is offset by the cheap labor that many immigrants offer businesses. It’s not a cut and dry issue. That’s why these jerkoffs in Congress need to actually work.

Eddie and Alex Van Halen didn’t know how to speak any English when they came here undocumented with their parents in the 50s

Gene Simmons didn’t know English when he arrived with his mother, a Holocaust survivor, either. They also arrived in the 50s

I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. These two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

But they learned English to the point where you’d think it was their first language.

Did the Van Halens make the school hire Dutch speaking teachers?

Lots of these modern immigrants have no desire to learn English.

I can't claim to truly understand the laws, different visas, and so on. A coworker friend and his wife are from South America (Peru). The wife holds dual citizenship in Peru and the United States. He has his residency but has not yet obtained US citizenship. They have a daughter born in the US who is almost three and will be attending preschool soon. They both speak English well, but only speak Spanish to their daughter. His point of view is that she'll learn that at school. Really? She knows a little English from children's songs and shows, but not a lot. I don't understand why they're not teaching her both languages when they're bilingual and both documented and/or U.S. citizens. It seems like it will make things more difficult for her (at first).

EDIT: This wasn't meant to be about documented v undocumented. Just a comment on the "no desire to learn English" remark.

You don't understand because you clearly have no idea how language acquisition works.
1. you talk one single language with your child. Evidently your mother tongue, not only to express yourself with the most nuance as possible, but also because you'll have the largest vocabulary which the child will pick up. The better the first language is, the better the kid will pick up the second one. And another minor plus, the child won't pick up any mistake you could make in your learned language.
2. kids easily learn a second language from school and friends

The only downside is that racist shitheads could look down on you.

That makes sense. The downside you mentioned was my concern for them. We live in a red state with a lot of MAGA farmland areas.

That’s a whole other issue. From my experience there is a lack of interest in assimilating nowadays. People used to want to come here and fit in. Today they don’t have to because we accommodate everyone. Lack of a national identity destroys countries. We are beginning to see that now.

My granddaughter (4) is tri-lingual - mother and father from different countries, her dad's parents know barely 20 words in English. I speak English to her cos my Spanish is mierda and she picked it up easily at nursery. And she's had basic French classes already.

It's well documented that the younger they start, the better it is for the child. They're too young to know cultural rules so it's not a problem handling multilingual conversations. And it's great for general brain development that will help in other disciplines.

Your "national identity" is that you're all still distinguishing yourselves from each other based on where your great great etc. grandparents were from. Why shouldn't a modern immigrant do the same?

In my eyes, that pretty much disqualifies you from the conversation. Why start so many inflammatory threads about political/social issues and stir shit up rather than exercise the few strategies we have as citizens in this country? I would agree that both parties fall woefully short of doing what the country needs but not voting just suggests you don't really care to be part of the solution at all, even in a small way.

And yes, I respect that this is your board and you can do whatever you want just as we can criticize each other however we want.

Meh. I also know Mexicans who don't speak Spanish because their parents wanted them to blend in the U.S.

Seems kind of sad to me. Cutting off a link to your heritage so your child will be accepted.

...and from my experience, 100% of "these modern immigrants" have a desire to learn English, but ain't nobody got time to fuck around with that shit. They got work to do, kids to raise, OTHER people's kids to raise. Duolingo takes a back seat.

Their kids will speak English, and THEIR kids will not even speak the language of their heritage...just like it has always been. I sit here 4 generations from Finn/Swede immigrants not being able to tell you a single word of either language (Riccola? Is that Swedish? Is Sauna?)

The hand-wringing was the exact same 150 years ago and 100 years ago and 50 years ago.

Part of the fascism checklist.

Suppression of Opposition:
Fascist regimes tend to silence dissent and eliminate any opposition through intimidation, censorship, and violence.

This shit keeps up and Trump or one of his minions will be John Hinckley’d by someone with an agenda. Frankly, so be it.
Keep commenting like that, and you might find a knock on your door when you least expect it.

Just saying, making comments like that about any President, regardless of sides, even on any form of social media is not a good idea but it is a Free country, right?

Ordinarily yes, but given that this is a 25-year old message board with about 20 active members, you're probably safe.

It's absolutely idiotic to contend Zep weren't A-listers in the 1970s.

To be clear, I was saying since last summer, two guys from his party tried or planned to, and probably more. His buddies, Putin and Xi, probably have "contingencies" if they need them. Pissing off the crazies, allies, or otherwise, usually isn't in the best interest. Ramping up Iran again is bound to go well.

There was a "protest" in Downtown Las Vegas last night -- 94 arrests.

I saw police lights on my block and just figured it was a normal night. I didn't even know it was literally on my block until I saw it on X!

Pretty lame and pretty tame. This is Las Vegas, so they should at least put on a good show since the "protest" won't make a difference.
