I guess it depends where you're from.
They had some big hits in the US, but they were pretty far apart and never became an arena act.
But here in the netherlands, golden earring is the biggest rock band ever produced by this country (if you don't count van Halen and the funny thing is, most Dutch will not count van Halen since they don't realise it.).
But people here will know who George Kooymans and Barry Hay are....
