The Jaime St. James Era of Warrant

Spinning Born Again today.... hell of a lot better than most CDs with replacement singers. Lots of great riffs. Down in Diamonds and Hell, CA rock.

In 2006 I watched St. James front Warrant at a local casino. The band was trying to push the “Born Again” album and”Bourban County Line” as the lead track. Looking back now, I found St. James to be a more proficient front man than Robert Mason has become. Jamie was more like Jani as far as crowd engagement goes.

I tried to listen to the post-Jani albums and nothing really caught on. Just generic.

Saw this lineup at a bar (Whiskey Dicks) in Columbus OH. It was just okay. Never been a fan of St James.

Saw them live a month before this album came out. To me Jani is the one and only true vocalist for Warrant and this was the first and only time i saw Warrant live without Jani singing. The band sounded good and Jaime St. James tried his best. Was never a fan of Black 'n Blue but he sang well.

Mason is the better singer, but his 2 Warrant albums are totally forgettable. IMO, St. James was the better fit and the Born Again CD does have some good stuff on it.

So weird to think about that album almost being 20 years old.

I remember liking it at the time, but I haven't listened to it since. They had a video for every song, right? Cool idea, don't remember any of the videos.

I saw them live, but I don't remember anything other than they played "Big Talk" and I went "Ugh." I was an insufferable teenager! (I was 27.)

Never saw them live but I love the album. I saw Warrant a ton with Jani and he sucked more often than not. He was usually drunk, crying like a bitch about some ballad he wrote that made him millions but that he pissed away prematurely or acting like he missed the 80s while singing grunge music. I could’ve handled JSJ fronting Warrant all these years later. Mason is a way better singer but he’s not as good of a frontman imo. I wasn’t a BNB fan in the 80s but I like them now.

Yeah, it's weird - I love Mason's work with Lynch Mob/End Machine, but I thought Rockaholic was unlistenable due to Mason's vocals.

I thought the songs on Rockaholic weren’t as good as Born Again. Had Jaime stuck around maybe he would have encountered the same thing. He did have quite a few cowrites and solo writes on BA. So I find that the missing X factor. I felt they had more chemistry with Jaime than Robert. I remember Joey being a big BNB fan back in the day.

I really don't have any interest in Warrant without Jani, but yeah, given the choice, I prefer Jaime St. James over Robert Mason.

Robert does a good job, don't get me wrong, but when the reunion fell apart in 2008, I thought the obvious move was to go back to Jaime. But I guess maybe there were some hurt feelings over what happened.

Shitty part of town, but it was a good place for local and low-tier touring bands. One of my cover bands played there a few times back in the early 2000s, and it was always a good time.

IIRC, there was a steel support pole that either ran straight through the stage floor to the ceiling or it was right up against the stage. Ambiance was not WD's strong suit.

Yeah, saw this lineup around that time at a free outdoor festival in Raleigh. Nice crowd of 3-4,000+. I feel the same way about St. James as a singer. He did just fine, in retrospect. Mason was also fine when I saw him front them at M3 a few years later. But I think JSJ may have been a more natural fit.

Bourbon County Line is probably the best tune they've created, post-Janie.

Should have hired Jesse Harte from Southgang, and all this could have been avoided. He was a perfect fit.

I saw this lineup at the inaugural Rocklahoma in 2007. They played "Bourbon County Line" and "Dirty Jack," which are the only songs from the Born Again album that I go back to. I recall them doing "Hold on to 18" as well at that show.

They put on a good show, but I remember being surprised by the amount of people there who had no idea that Jani Lane wasn't in the band anymore and were surprised and wondering who the new singer was.
