The biggest Danger Danger I remember in LA was opening for Alice Cooper at the Pantages Theatre (2500).

I'm not in a band, but I do write books, and do a lot of live events to promote those. One trick I've learned is to NEVER let the gig book your flight. Most companies/groups/etc. want to go the cheapest route possible which means bad airlines and awful flight times. Book your own stuff, pick your airline(s), get the miles so you can upgrade, pick your seat, and pick your airport. It's still not always going to be a smooth experience, but it's rarely a disaster.
