HAIR METAL ... Is the term offensive, is it irrelevant one way or the other, or does it put a black eye on the 80s?

The one that started it all. Spreading gossip and insults since 1998.

I don't care for it, but it's so widespread that I'd be a dork trying to correct everyone. I'd rather say 80s-style hard rock or 80s pop rock. That's what I'll do.

How many wigs and extensions were used in the average 80’s band?

Case closed.

Hell no. Term wasn't even a thing at the time. I'd guess mid to late 90's when the name stuck.

If you are offended by it, then go out for a walk..Was an awesome time..

Kinda depends on who’s saying it… sorta like ‘N’ word.

Musicians and fans of that scene are free to use the term because in that context it’s not meant to be derogatory. It’s almost a point of pride.

But I do get irritated when outsiders… fans of talentless and inferior genres like mallcore, nu metal, bro country, and alt rock… say it because in that context it’s meant as an insult.

I call it hair metal. I don't give a shit if it upsets Eddie Trunk or Bach or whoever. It's an easy label that people understand.

IMO, it makes it 100% clear, the musical genre your talking about. You use terms like "80's hard rock", and that could mean The Smithereens or Huey Lewis and the News to some people, you say "Hair Metal", and they know it's Motley Crue, RATT, Poison, etc. Either way the best music ever created!

I don't mind it at all. Sorta like Yacht Rock, Grunge, etc. It's just a way to define a genre of music. Nothing more.

Huey ain't Hard Rock. Someone could look at a picture of Queensryche in the 80s and refer to them as Hair Metal. You're really gonna put them in the same genre as Poison?

Never once bothered me as personally it invoked a period of time, not a look or talent level
However, it now bothers me only cause of the redneck idiot fans who use that term

It's definitely meant as a derogatory term. Used to minimize the genre. I always ask, was Heart a hair band? Because they had the uniform.

So do Mumford & Sons, and their ilk of hipster alt country band with their uniform of rockabilly shirts, ridiculous beards, horn rimmed glasses, man buns, etc. Same with the bro country acts who all look the same with their ridiculous beards. They're all "hair bands," part II.

Self important old losers tend to get their panties twisted up about terms to describe the sound of bands from their era.

The guy from the Cure getting offended at being called "goth"

Nikki Sixx being offended at Crue being called "hair metal"

The Steely Dan guy getting upset someone called them "Yacht Rock"

etc.

Douchebags that want to act like what they did was so precious and important that it can't be lumped in with bands from the same time that made similar-sounding music.

There was a lot of great music created in the “hair metal “era. The good music from the bigger acts are still playing today on classic rock radio. Lesser bands that are played on radio played here or there. Trunk trying to be a martyr over the hair metal title is more of the guy idolizing his own commentary. Great songs stay in rotation, lesser material does not.

It's better than calling it Butt Rock. I follow/support a local record store & one day the owner was making a video about a bunch of vinyl that came in and he mentioned he got a lot of rare Butt Rock. I never purchased anything from him again. Idiot.

As a bonus. Here is the CEO looking chickish. Tuff........Good Guys Wear Black.
