They were solid, but closer to Ojeda/French than Tipton/Downing.
Graham Oliver did the basic 70's blues rock stuff, and Paul Quinn did the flashier solos.
Neither one was a virtuoso, but they weren't hacks. More Wishbone Ash than Iron Maiden.

I liked Saxon well enough back in the day, but off the top of my head the intro to Princess is the Night is the only thing that stands outTenacious_Dio wrote: ↑Tue Sep 09, 2025 11:59 am They were solid, but closer to Ojeda/French than Tipton/Downing.

I liked em.
Not the flashiest of players , but that dude with the mustache does a fantastic job on ‘Broken Heros.’

Pretty much this. They fit Saxon’s style, nothing more, nothing less.Tenacious_Dio wrote: ↑Tue Sep 09, 2025 11:59 am They were solid, but closer to Ojeda/French than Tipton/Downing.

They came up with good riffs. In the solo department they were pretty standard.

I can't speak to Oliver, but when I saw them in 2015, I was actually a bit surprised at how good Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt were. I wouldn't put them on the level of Tipton and Downing, as far as older players go, but they were more than competent.
