I'm thinking of swapping the pickups for Duncan 59s for a bluesy rock tone, any other suggestions for pickups?

LP headstock (Warmoth neck), Honduran Mahogany Tokai flat top tobaccoburst body, locking Grovers... I only want $400.
My buddy Brent has the Axis stuff and it's unused. Make him an offer.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Sounds nice! I don't know what shapes you're using, but consider that these manufacturers all make their parts to fit stock with stock Fender parts unless otherwise noted. I guess if I had to economize, and could get the body that'd fit, I'd go higher-end for the neck and lower-end on the body if you needed to economize.Space Bear wrote:Yeah, I've been ogling a lot of stuff on the Warmoth site. I already know exactly what I want to do, it's just a matter of committing the cash to it. But damn I have expensive tastes... the fully painted body alone is going to cost about $800! I'm pretty sure the whole thing will end up running close to $1500. Rather spend that on something with my specific wants, instead of accepting what I get off the rack. My goal is to take the best of PRS and Suhr and put them together. Of course, I'll post pics when I do.lerxstcat wrote:Not with Warmoth, but i've put parts mutts together before. Body and neck were already finished so it was just bolting and soldering. Warmoth makes top-quality parts though, if you consult with them so they make sure everything goes together as far as scale lengths and such, you can't go wrong with Warmoth parts. If your budget is tighter Mighty Mite parts aren't bad either, and cost quite a bit less. Their quality is comparable to Fender so it's not bad at all.Space Bear wrote:I'm seriously considering building my own Warmoth guitar. Anyone here done that?
Pyt it this way - neither Warmoth nor Mighty Mite are gonna say their parts fit on the other guys' guitars - they're gonna stammer and say "Oh, we can't guarantee that!" BUT, if BOTH guarantee their parts to interchange with stock Fender parts, then what do YOU think?

Hah! Now that's what I'd call a real carved top
Was playing one of these just a few days ago.I have no real live use for it at the moment but damn,it sure sounded good..
I had never actually played one before but now I'm seriously considering ordering one in Jetglo black rather than the Fireglo in the pic.Anyone have experience with the newer Ricks? Are they consistent in quality?I've always wanted one and I'm sure we could add a few songs to our set where I could show her off.Prolly some Beatles or Petty..hehe

I'm gonna keep it simple and get everything from one place, no matter what place it is. Shape-wise it's a strat body, nothing unusual. I have three different designs I want to do. Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Yeah, you can't budget or cut corners for a nice quilt finish. Onlyu other option you might consider if it's gonna be a basic Strat would be Carvin. It's possible they might put a finished guitar in your hand for what the Warmouth parts alone cost. They won't do a real Strat headstock though. Oh, and whether Carvin or Warmoth, GET the stainless steel frets if it's really a lifetime axe for you. Refrets are going up all the time and you'll never ever need one with SS frets.Space Bear wrote:I'm gonna keep it simple and get everything from one place, no matter what place it is. I want one of those too someday. But I just want a 6-string one. I almost bought one from a pawn shop years ago but I let it get away while I was trying to get the money together. Super unique tone. You can't get it from any other guitar. I played a new one about a year ago. It was a little less resonant but still nice.Gibsonite wrote:Hah! Now that's what I'd call a real carved top

Rics look AMAZING, but play and feel weird, and have weird, sub-modern parts.( like those annoying, barely functional bridges that look like they are built out of stuff somebody picked up at a hardware store...)
I've been looking at early copies like Ibanez and Greco that tend to be good guitars but without the idiosyncracies, but they are rare and getting expensive because of Ric's no copies policy.
I actually had an unpleasant email exchange with John Hall over at Ric a couple years back...I was all:"Dude, split off a downmarket brand like Epi and Squier, use the same great looks but with contemporary playability and features, and actually get them in the kid's hands. You'll sell millions!"
His response was kind of:"Fuck you, I hate you, this will never happen, die."
It's a very odd mindset over there...they have a 2 year backorder...and they're okay with that.
They have no interest in expanding, no interest in picking up market share...no interest in modernizing anything, (though they are using C&C machines, so they will modernize if they fucking feel like it!), no interest in expanded visibility, no interest in making their guitars more accessable to people who can't pony up $1500 for a guitar.
...it makes me very sad...I love the look and hate everything else.
...fuckers.

I agree but the fact remains that you absolutely CANNOT get that weird Rickenbaker sound out of any other guitar. That's why they're ornery dicks about it. I'm sure if they modernized the wrong shit they'd lose the sound.Sleek wrote:Super unique tone="they sound funny".exitflagger wrote: I want one of those too someday. But I just want a 6-string one. It does suck that they're so expensive and unavailable.

I also kinda think you run ANY 12 through a Jangle Box and it'll sound like Petty/Harrison/McGuinn...
...and they tend to have weird fingerboard/necks. I ain't got fat fingers, but their necks tend to be too skinny even for me.
...oh yeah...I forgot, they also tend to have confusing feature sets...like the mysterious fifth knob.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Oh I can. It's mostly arpeggios with a super clean amp setting that accentuates it. Tele's do come closest to it though. Like I say, I prefer the six-string ones. They get almost a banjo-y twang on ringing arpeggios. The basses have a very identifiable sound too.Sleek wrote:I dunno about the "ric" sound...aside from the 12 strings, I can never tell when somebody on a Beatles or Petty recording is using a Ric or a Tele...
Agreed on all that. They're definitely weird, highly specialized instruments. Terrible for lead playing, sound like shit with too much gain, etc. I've fucked with that "texture" knob and I can't hear any difference in the sound either. I think it supposedly fades it from one pick-up to the other or some shit....and they tend to have weird fingerboard/necks. I ain't got fat fingers, but their necks tend to be too skinny even for me.
