Why not go with a good ol' JB? I guess maybe they run a little high output-wise but they have a nice mid bump. The JB is pretty "butt-rock L.A. metal" IMO.Sleek wrote: I'm looking at a new hum for my Dokken geetar...the Duncan Distortion I have in there is sweet, but kinda flubs out the low end distortion-wise. (It's over 16k ohms...to give yins an idea.)
Looking for something more mid-output with a mid EQ peak...Di Marzio "Fred", EVO and Mo' Joe's look interesting...all are essentially mid boosted...
I'm not looking for a full-range, ringy PAF, so nobody suggest shit like Rio Grande's! Going for butt-rock L.A. metal tone here...

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Gonna be throwing together a cheap pedal board - something I don't mind bringing out and stomping on.
Any alternative suggestions are appreciated - been trying to keep the pedals around $70 and under.
GFS Tuner
MXR Dyna Comp
MXR Classic Overdrive from Guitar Center
Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus
Visual Sound Garage Tone Axel Grease Delay
Already have the Classic Overdrive (it's a gift my brother is getting for me) but I'd be open to suggestions if you feel there are better alternatives for the price. Prefer true bypass as some of the buffers in cheaper pedals are lackluster.

For your price range, that'll get the job done just fine. Maybe throw a Dano Fish n' Chips EQ pedal in the mix for some added versatility.Captain Morgan wrote: GFS Tuner

Thanks! What do you think of their other "food" titled pedals? I really like the tone of the Hashbrown Flanger but I'm not sure what effect it'd have on my clean signal.Ten Years Gone wrote:For your price range, that'll get the job done just fine. Do you already have the MXR Dyna Comp or just thinking of getting it? I've been considering getting a compression pedal for when I'm playing clean, but I'm not sure. I guess they color you signal a bit and that puts me off.
My set up is pretty simple:
Vox V847 Wah
Tube Screamer 808
Big Muff Pi Fuzz
Korg tuner
Should I throw a compression pedal in this mix? I'm also debating between the Line 6 delay or Maxon analog delay. Any recommendations here?

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Owned a few MXR compressors and they do affect your tone - but that's what they're supposed to do. The Barber Tonepress is the most transparent because of the mix knob that mixes in your clean signal. They didn't color it as much as they squash or flatten and pop certain aspects. But the Barber is the most transparent.
I like the MXR stuff because I like heavier compression. The Dyna Comp works because it's cheap, the Custom Comp is a bit more but it's VERY quiet and effective. I'd say if you have the money to spare it wouldn't hurt, especially to even out the signal to your fuzz.
People dig the Line 6 delays, I like the Maxon delay. It's all in your budget and if you want pure analog or simulated analog and digital delays.

Cool. I appreciate the heads up on the Comp Pedal. I have just heard that it kinda buzzes when it's in use, so that threw me off a little bit. But I have been considering it, so maybe I'll give it a go the next time I'm at Guitar Center.
As for the delay... another big choice. I love the sound of the Maxon for the delay. But I get more for cheaper with the Line 6. More styles of delay and I did love the sound of their delay when I had one of their combo amps. I'm super fussy when it comes to gear, especially with the price of both those delay pedals. Hell, it took me a good month before I decided on the Vox Wah over the Crybaby.
I love having these kinds of "big decisions," though. Means I get to go play at Guitar Center for a few hours.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Some comps do buzz but it depends on the construction and the chip used. The Custom Comp uses a quieter chip. If you don't max out your comp you won't get much noise, if any. I just use it for a subtle effect, or a complete squash.Atomicpunk18 wrote:Captain Morgan wrote:Owned a few MXR compressors and they do affect your tone - but that's what they're supposed to do. You might want to check out the Vox Time Machine delay. It's got modern/vintage voicing and a tap tempo. $200. I thought about getting one before but never found one in person.

I don't know if you care, but for the grand total of $60 (plus shipping), you could be the proud owner of both of these:Captain Morgan wrote:Gonna be throwing together a cheap pedal board - something I don't mind bringing out and stomping on.

The SD1 looks like hell but functions great. The Chorus is in good condition all around.
I don't understand compressors

I've only used my Dyna Comp 2x and have the original box. $50 if you want it... I want to get a boutique kind of comp...
The Classic Overdrive has an internal switch you should use... makes it BADASS! You have to take the board out and you'll see it on the topside... makes all the difference.

Whoa! Only the green Classic Overdrives have the switch. The new black ones don't.

Is there a cheap clone/relative of the original Marshall Bluesbreaker overdrive? I'm trying to find something in that style to add to my "cheaper" pedalboard. I am also looking for a cheaper Vox-type overdrive pedal as well. I'd like to keep it under $100 as none of my pedals (so far) have ventured over $70.

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
...so I need pickup advice.
I got my little stagemaster here I am looking to do lynch with.
I originally stuck a Duncan Distortion in it...I loved the output. The guitar felt ALIVE, and any goddamned annoying thing you'd hit like annoying whammy harmonics just jumped out..but the tone (with this guitar...cheep wood+Floyd with aftermarket brass block) is kinda crap...sort of emphasizing the lows, with a brittle top that sounded almost twangy and no real midrange.
...so I figured I'd try a Duncan Alnico 2 pro I had around. (The slash one.)
I liked this pickup in another guitar I have, but in this one, it sounded crappy...like a fucking banjo. Really bad.
...so I pulled that one. (I have it down to about 5 minutes!)
...and I put in a black chrome GFS Retrotron hot Nashville I had around in it. Despite the name and the look, they are just humbuckers with some metal covers to make them look gretschy. I thought this one might be good, because it has a real punchy midrange to it...(I have one in a schecter tele and sounds great.)
This pickup is about the closest. It doesn't sound thin or brittle at all. Tone wise, it's great, with a real scrunchy mid to it.
...it could use more output though. All of the bullshit that jumped out with the distortion just kinda...doesn't now. The distortion made me want to play far, far too fast...(which is kind of the point on any guitar painted tiger stripe!)
So, finally the question: Anybody know a good, cheep, high-output humbucker with a pronounced, scrunchy mid bump?
I'm looking for $40 and under. Used or new.

Not quite sure if this is it - but a GFS Dream 180 is taking the Gretsch formula and adding some PAF tones to it.
