Anybody have any experience with those Chinese counterfeit guitars? I'm thinking about taking a flyer on one. I figure best case I can end up with a decent guitar for very little dough (after a bunch of mods), and worst case I can Townsend it.

I've never played one, I've heard some good things about them bit iot was from people who think an Epi with newe pickups and hardware is equal to a Gibson. I also know one guy who says he sold one to a pawnshop and they gave him Gibson money for it - IOW he said it fooled them, in stock condition.

If you have the money to experiment, you'd be the first person I'd know whose opinion has credibility with me. I think your best- and worst-case scenarios are right on.

Maybe rather than trying a bunch of random pickups when the Distortion ALMOST does what you want, have you considered an EQ pedal instead to tame the low end you don't like?

That was about the first thing I tried...didn't really work. The problem is that if a pup has fundamental characteristics you don't care for, say the twang of a tele, all the eq in the world isn't going to change that or the way the pickup responds in a certain range.

...which is to say: I could ameliorate the lows coming from the pickup with the eq, but not make them tighter or more useful.

Doesn't matter tho. We did a run-through last night and the GFS was great...solid and midrangey with no sizzle or twang.

Those things are stupid cheap Lerx. Around 250 bucks for an LP Custom. Supposedly they C&C em from Gibby specs, so the cuts ought to be reasonable. I'm expecting some crap wood, like you'd get in an Epi, and probably some laminates but I can't buy aftermarket bodies and necks for that cheap. I'm guessing I'd have to change the hardware, pots and pups, so figure another 300 in parts more or less, and I'm sure I'll have to dress and level the frets and spend a little time cleaning it up, but I could end up with a fake but reasonable facsimile of a Paul for 550 bucks and a little elbow grease. The only real question I've got is whether the truss rod works or not because just about everything else is pretty much fixable. If not, I won't spend the dough on mods. I'll just pick a show when I want to pull a Pete and have at it I guess. It's a gamble, but I think I'm gonna give it a shot. I mean, I spent 200 on a bar tab a couple of weeks ago. It's not like it's the biggest gamble I ever took you know?

OK, you hated it, but... could you have turned it into a decent guitar if you'd modded the fuck out of it? Was it built well, but just had shit electronics, or was it just shit period?

It felt ok, looked ok, but..
1) Electronics sucked... had to replaced ALL of that
2) Didn't have thickness of tone due to crap wood... but sounded ok, but different
3) Headstocks are never 100% right, so goofy
4) Really should get major fret dress or a refret
