Bolan was the main lyric writer and that album is very verbose.
That kept chicks away more than any perceived heaviness

I figured this was just going to be revisionism, but actually calling radio stations and asking them to not play a song, only to be told to fuck off is an oddly specific thing to make up.
Saying that, STTG isn't a commercial album compared to the debut. Quicksand Jesus is cool, but it ain't no hit single (and wasn't). The chorus only comes in once and doesn't hit until almost 4 minutes in for fuck's sake.
If anything, the album overperformed given how dark and uncommercial it is.

Wasted Time should have been single number two for sure.

Just rewatched their SNL performance (Nov 1991) --
Part 1 - https://vimeo.com/82215907
Part 2 - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1161rl
Good god (bless my soul), they were on fire. For their second song, you'd think they would have played another new one -- maybe even (gasp) a ballad -- but instead, they came out full guns blazing (and hair flying!) with an oldie that's one of the heaviest songs in their catalog. Ballsy move.
Love the build-up in "Monkey Business" too. "You're allowed to have fun." "This is a nice, mellow one."
A moment in time. Too bad it didn't last longer.

Replying to myself.
Just watched this for the first time -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nq7Fs5PTe4&t=1207s
They run through "Riot Act" twice. Again, pure fire. Wonder why they pivoted to "Piece of Me" instead for the live broadcast.

What a difference having a bass player that can actually put down a groove makes. Bolan is a fucking monster of a player.
