Nice.. thanks for the advice.ElToro wrote:Changing a nut needs to be done by someone with experience, but lubing/graphiting is simple.T-Jay wrote:Is changing the nut pretty straight forward or best left to someone with experience with it??ElToro wrote:All those tuners are great if you get the high end versions, but you're not staying in tune at all? Maybe you could try putting graphite on your nut first.. it may be sticky.
Not something I've needed to do before...
Pull the strings out of their grooves, make sure there are no spurs or jagged edges and take a soft pencil into those groves... even coat the string near the nut woith graphit... that will let you know if something's wrong.. if it continues to go out of tune, it must be the tuners.

The guys at McKnight have a few sets of Fender pickups lying around, if you want some cheap.

You know, I played the thing last night, and it sounded pretty damned good...I may not replace these pups for a while.
I was on the rhythm pup most of the night, or the rhythm+neck out of phase and it sounded satisfyingly stratty...the few times I went to the lead, it sounded good, too...
Wiring harness has to go, tho. I'm thinking of disconnecting the tones (I keep hitting them) and just getting a better volume pot.
Damned thing stays in tune well, even with moderate bar usage.
Also feels and plays well. I may even go up to .11s just so it fights me a little more...
All in all, a good $119 spent.

Fine. Indonesian. Craftsmanship.
Mystery. Wood.
Yeah, that's right.
Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I think they are basswood right now. Other cheap woods used are agathis and paulownia. It's still a maple neck with a rosewood or bubinga fretboard in that neck of the woods. Cheap labor is an amazing thing!

Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
Here's a phone pic of my new strat:
It's hard to see the stuff I have done to it...whole body has had the gloss knocked off and the edges sanded to show wood in spots, then recovered with tru-oil and resanded for that old finish look. The headstock got a new label, then coats of tru-oil and "aged varnish" stain. The pickguard and stuff have all been done too, all chrome parts have been nicely scuffed and I bought a set of black knobs and shit for that '70's look.
It seriously just looks old in person...not like some bad relic job...which it is!
I already got asked about my "cool old strat" at a rehearsal with it.
Feels really good and sounds fine, though I am corresponding with a guy about maybe winding me some pups specially for the '60's soul I bought this to play.
I did, however, get a cts 250k volume pot, which I wired straight, taking the tone knobs completely out of the circuit.
Here's a stock before photo:

Seymour Duncan P-rail? Sweet! shitpot of wiring, and switching to figure out...but damn ,the versatility!
Ever get the itch for a good pawnshop crawl? Been meaning to pick up a good OD pedal on the cheap....stopped off at one on the way home from work(the guy that runs the place turned me on to Brian Wampler's boutique pedals....expensive muthafuckas, but they's GOOD)..$20 later, fresh battery and cleanup...Digitech Screamin' Blues OD/Distortion. Not a bad little pedal at all.....not as all-dominating as my Keeley-mod DS-1, more subtle and articulate in ways.

Thinking about getting a "Chibson"..I know there was a thread about them..What was the general opinion?Worth $300?
Re: El Toro's Official Guitarded Thread...
I have never played one. but Tracii Guns loves his. He says go to seller Jaja and ask a lot of questions. I take that to mean talk to him and tell him exactly what you want on your5 guitar. Others have said they didn't like their and Tracii said "you should have talked to them more" Maybe message Tracii and ask him more like exactly what questions to ask, and if he really means talk, like phone and not email, what exactly to say to get a good guitar.hendrixstrat wrote:Thinking about getting a "Chibson"..I know there was a thread about them..What was the general opinion?Worth $300?

I had 2 fake Gibby's that rocked, but had to make room for a healthier herd.
I picked up a Kramer Focus 6000 that will probably be sold off soon (original Floyd) and my son bought "The Bomber."
The Bomber smokes his old Whammy.

I ordered the UnO eprom for my Behringer FCB1010 yesterday

All the info I've come across recommends this as the way to go... now if only my cables would arrive already so I can use the damn thing.

Doing a little work on it, so no photos yet. It had been painted white (pretty well, actually) and I am restoring it to a more original color. (I found a gun-metal grey with a *hint* of metallic to it at an auto store~perfect).
I'm kinda tapped money-wise right now...I wanna take it to my guy for a tune-up. (Sounds great now, but I wanna max out the clean headroom.) and maybe get some more efficient speakers. (It has a *beautiful* set of late '50's Jensen alnico 12"s now, but I could use a little more volume...)
I needed something "fender combo" ish with a price ceiling around $400...which would only get me into the cheepest fenders (Blues Jr. HRD, etc.) . I think the same price for this puppy is pretty damned good.
This is for the '60's soul thing I am doing...it is the companion to the strat I just bought/built.
I either gotta hit ebay or just wait 'till next paycheck...and I ain't good at waiting!
