Correct. He played drums on the first album of a band called Prophet.

Others:

John Corabi: was a rhythm guitarist in Ratt and Brides of Destruction.
Ronnie Mancuso: guitarist for Beggars & Thieves, played bass with Red Dragon Cartel.
Bruno Ravel: was the guitarist for D2 during the Dawn tour, though he still played all the bass guitars on the record.
Brian Tichy: has played guitar in some project bands.
Mark Boals: primarily known as a singer but briefly filled in on bass with Dokken.

You wouldn't know it from their albums, is the joke.

Since 2000 you might as well say he's the Ondes Martenot player or whatever.

Drummer for weezer played guitar for awhile, when the lead singer decided he didn't wanna play it any more. Not sure if its still that way or not.
I'm finding it difficult to masturbate to this. I'm trying, I just have so little to work with...

Now they're back to how they used to be. The drummer couldn't play drums for a while and instead of firing him, the band let him play the guitar.

Varg Vikernes switched from drums/guitar/bass/vocals to shitty casio keyboard. It worked out amazing.

There's actually lots of good examples in the original Norwegian black metal scene. There were some talented motherfuckers who could seemingly do it all. If you look at Dodheimsgard, Aura Noir, Immortal, off the top of my head.

Chris Cornell started out as a drummer but I don't think he gigged with Soundgarden as drummer. For the first two albums he was just a vocalist. With Loud Love he added the guitar. Ditto Eddie Vedder. he added guitar after Vitalogy.

Lemmy was a guitarist when he joined Hawkwind but their bassist quit or was fired, i forget the details, but he switched to bass out of necessity.

Bjorn Gelotte played drums on two of In Flames' masterpieces, The Jester Race and Whoracle, but switched to guitar for their third slab of brilliance, Colony.

Hana of Gacharic Spin was the backing vocalist and drummer, initially. They had a full time singer. Then they added a keyboardist, Reona. When the singer quit they held auditions but no one made an impression, so Hana and Reona became a full time vocalists, splitting the job while still playing their instruments. Technically neither girl switched, she merely added vocals to her duties.

Abbath!

Played bass for several albums. Then switched to guitar. He also played drums on the first few releases. The guy is a true musical genius. I always referred to Prince as a poor man's Abbath.

Steve Perry used to be a drummer when he first started out, then he switched to singing.

Dave Grohl was drumming for Nirvana, then switched to guitar

Drummer of matchbox 20 went to rhy guitar after they booted original rhy guitarist. Stacey from American Hi Fi joined the band on drums.
I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. These two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

Not exactly; Sheryl plays guitar and bass within her own show, depending on the song for a couple decades now. The OP did say not multi-instrumentalists, but the Romantics' Rich Cole and Mike Skill sometimes also switch instruments in the show for certain songs (guitar and bass). That's the only time I've seen that. Not like Sheryl or McCartney's band, where they play different things to accomodate the singer/song. They just flat out swap the instruments.

Skill is a good example, he was the lead guitarist for the first 2 Romantics' album, left before the third, and came back as the bass player for the 4th album. At some point in the last 10 years, their lead guitarist left and he switched back to guitar and they brought Cole back on bass.

Laurence Tolhurst was originally the drummer in the Cure, but after a few albums, switched to keyboards.

Someone already mentioned Page switching from bass to guitar in the Yardbirds, when that happened, Chris Dreja switched from guitar to bass. When the Yardbirds have reunited, he switched back to guitar.

During the Mickey Thomas era of Jefferson Starship, David Frieberg and Pete Sears would trade off on bass and keys/piano for different songs live and on album, when they became the Starship, Frieberg left and Sears just played bass. When Frieberg came back to Jefferson Starship, he played guitar.

Billy Sherwood was originally brought into Yes as a potential replacement for Jon Anderson during the time Jon was doing Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe. After Anderson rejoined, Sherwood ended up working with Chris Squire in his solo band and on the next Yes tour, he was brought on as an auxiliary player to cover extra guitar and keys parts - and supposedly, to be a back up for Chris Squire, who was having some health issues at the time. When Trevor Rabin left, they made him an official member as a second guitarist for a couple of albums/tours. He left the band for over a decade and he came back as the bass player when Squire died.

McCartney was originally on guitar and piano in the Beatles before they were signed. When Stu Sutcliffe left, they didn't replace him and Paul moved over to bass.

Speaking of Jesperses, Stig was the lead vocalist for the early D.A.D., and then Jesper Binzer took over as lead vocals.
