How long are tour/staging rehearsals for a HUGE band

Post by theglammerthebetter » Wed Mar 21, 2018 10:32 am

Our old 15000 seat arena has been booked for a confidential event April 1-April 24 and the rumblings around town is that it will for U2 tour rehearsals

Isnt 3 weeks a bit much for that ?

Yeah. That's a long, expensive rental, and then there's crew salaries, incidentals, etc. There must be new, untried production stuff. Sounds like whoever it is will have something nobody's ever seen before at a concert. More bigly than a giant spider.

Nah, big bands do lengthy production rehearsals. I used to be in a band with a dude who was besties with Monte Pittman, and he was swinging by Madonna rehearsals at the Forum for weeks.

Wow. I'm surprised. I've seen arena bands like Rush, Scorps, etc. begin tours with only two or three days production rehearsal.
Even with a skeleton crew of venue staff, that's an expensive rental. It's gotta be someone big.

Def Leppard had four days of full production rehearsal in the middle of the Hysteria tour. They rented 12k capacity Scandinavium in Gothenburg before the 1988 European leg started, and they had been touring for five months or so before that. I can only imagine how much rehearsal a band that hasn't been on the road for 2-3 years needs.

Well the venue has been locked up for 2 years(only thing that took place there was last month when Cirque Du Soleil used 5 weeks it for CORTEO rehearsals) so its probably cheap compared to most

I cant imagine music superstars spending 3 weeks here and not getting bored out of their minds this aint LA   , even for getting big press like rolling stone magazine or the entertainment tonight type shows we are so far away from everything

If its U2 people will be pissed they have never performed here for their whole career and now will be here for 3 weeks with the doors locked and still no way for their fans to see them

Could be Willie Williams is supervising the production elements without the band present. In 2005 he was doing the same thing with a stadium stage in a field in Belgium while the band was touring arenas in North America.

In 2005 they were using the LA Sports Arena prior to the tour start in San Diego and the last day they let the fans outside into one arena section and performed the whole set.

Since the word is out, if it is U2, I predict they'll do a local promo gig (maybe a club) ala the Stones.

I think Nickleback spent a week in Fort Wayne last year before their tour kicked off in Indy. I also believe Avenged Sevenfold spent a week in Green Bay getting ready for a tour.

Rush rehearsals for recent tours ran 2 months. That was just the three of them in a space getting the songs and their timing down. They are one of the few bands that didn't use a click track during their live shows.

Pretty sure the live show tour rehearsals with the full stage show and all the cues was only a few days to a week.

Peart used a click track so that he would be in time with the sequencers. Before in-ear monitors you'd see Peart put
on a pair of headphones.

In preparation for the "R40" tour they each spent about a month individually working on material for the tour. Then Geddy
and Alex flew out to CA to rehearse with Neil. Then they went into production rehearsals. I think they spent around 3 months
total preparing for the tour. Plus, Geddy had worked with his brother on the videos and Geddy worked with the production team on the "going
back through time" theme of the tour.

Lep rehearsed for 2 weeks before their last tour. I think that's their norm nowadays.

U2 has that massive screen stretching across the arena that they walk through and play on the smaller stage. A lot more moving pieces involved. Most of other bands sign off on the drawings of staging and then it's up to the crew until a week before the show when they show up and play on it.

The Stones on the Licks Tour signed off on drawings, saw the arena stage put together a week before in Maple Leaf Gardens, had two days of the stadium setup rehearsal in Foxboro and then a day of the arena setup in Boston. Of course they spent months in a rehearsal space on the tunes.

Rush did Vapor Trails rehearsals in Glen Falls Civic Center and the shed in Hartford and Test For Echo in Albany.

Allentown seems to be a popular rehearsal spot now. I think the major staging company is close by. Ozzy and Elton John are both starting there.

I worked one of the production rehearsals in the early 90s. It was in Albuquerque and was two days. The official first show sounded like shit. I walked the entire arena and there were massive standing bass waves, from the floor to rafters. I think I recall that Rush did the production rehearsals for the next tour in Lubbock.

Alice Cooper does about 5 days in a 1600 seat casino. The theatre is empty during the week. Nita & Tommy missed sevearal cues first night of tour and Cooper lit into them harshly.

If it’s not a rock band it might be an artist with shitloads of dancers, changing clothes etc. That needs to be more rehearsed than four guys going on stage, rocking out their greatests hits, like they’ve done the past 30 years.

It's strange. I'd rather prefer U2 locked away where I have no chance if seeing them.

I would imagine a lot of the production rehearsal would also be complete load in/out setup and tear down a few days in a row. That stuff has to get in and out of trucks in specific order. I saw U2 last year, I don't think the band themselves had too many position cues, it was more about the staging and video. I don't recall having pyro, but that could be part of it...whoever it is.

Agreed - hell, when U2 had that stupid giant spider thing, they probably spent a week of "rehearsals" just with the crew practicing setting it up. From all reports, that took a day in and of itself. Probably a few days each time they have a different configuration too (slightly more or less lights, different venue configurations/different or adjusted sets.... I'd imagine the band is probably only there the last week or so. They can have techs walk around the rest of the time...
