Had they stayed together, what heights do you think they would have reached? Lyrics and music was pretty damn great.

Even if they stayed together, as a unit, they didn't have the chops to be huge. I think Joe would eventually quit, move to Texas and play roots music. Just before he passed, he talked to Joe Ely about going to Mexico to collaborate on writing. He'd want to make the move from angry young man to sage.

Hard to say. Their popularity was definitely on the rise after Combat Rock. Another big single/video might have given enough them that chance at superstardom, but I'm guessing that's not really what their goal was.

I love the Clash but IMO they were creatively dead after London Calling. They had the ability to write great/hooky/catchy songs as a unit but even that was spotty - with the exception of Give Em Enough Rope, which for me is a perfect album and one of the greatest rock albums ever. This aside, Strummer was absolutely vocally unintelligible at his best and didn't "sing" sing - the songs aren't melody driven like U2 songs and for the casual listener it doesn't work.

I love you, but if I agreed with the premise I would never read or post on this board. However, the premise must surely apply to the existence of any board that discusses Vinnie Vincent as an ongoing concern.

I don't think so, but there wouldn't be U2 without The Clash.

The fact that they put iced tea in Jack Daniels bottles ruined their career.

No, it was funny that they were later thought of as stadium headliner level band, when they we're opening for The Who. They were a laughing stock about the time of their last record. That one documentary ends with them playing Shea Stadium and no mention of Cut The Crap. They were a good band, but they are trying to rewrite the history.

this. Combat Rock was a two-song record. beyond the singles it was garbage. and they were ugly fuckers too. wouldn't have made it on the MTV.

Other than their first album, The Clash suck. I never understood why everyone sucks their dick. The Damned were far better. But I guess it gives more hipster cred to sing the praises of Joe Strummer.
