Ozzmosis vs. Down to Earth

Post by Psychobolia.com » Tue Jun 12, 2018 3:48 am

I know the general consensus around here is that D2E sucks, but I just listened to both albums today and still prefer the latter album...

Ozzmosis has some great tunes (Just want you, Thunder underground, Old LA tonight...) but a lot of filler too and the production is kinda dull to my ears; the guitar tone sounds muffled, lacks that big bright sound that was on No More Tears.
D2E sounds a lot better production-wise and the songs - less filler than Ozzmosis in my opinion - just flow better (Zakk's solo on Junkie, fucking awesome), even the Lennonesque ballad is great...

Hate away!

EDIT: just remembered that Geezer plays on Ozzmosis, which may help explain a lot of the "praise" this album gets...

Ozzmosis has Tomorrow, which is among the best songs Ozzy has ever done. I'd take it over D2E on the strength of that one alone and if I recall correctly, Zakk is super annoying on D2E.

I'll pick Ozzmosis.

DTE isnt bad either. About as good. I guess they feel similar. The last Ozzy albums I listened to.

DTE was 2001? Wow, i'm gonna go buy my grave plot, as that's just around the corner. :(

"Ozzmosis", that's where Ozzy's solo output ends for me.

In fact it ends after the first 3 songs on Ozzmosis. And the bonus tracks. All five (or six?) from this era are better than the obvious filler on Ozzmosis.

I'm one of the few Ozzy nut swingers in the world who still loves every album he puts out but it's not even a contest. In fact, I still can't believe how many people on here dislike and complain about Ozzmosis. It's always been one of my favorite Ozzy albums. So yeah, Ozzmosis gets the win for me. But I do like Down To Earth a lot.

I liked it a lot better when Kiss narrowed their scope to just "Tomorrow."

No contest for me. I don't like Down To Earth all that much and I really love Ozzmosis. To me there is very little filler. I love all the songs: they are at once heavy and melodic, simple and epic. His voice sounds great and the production is very cool, unlike anything he's ever done. It's one of my favorite Ozzy records. I wish he played more songs off that album live. Or any, for that matter. Or just more songs period.

Ozzmosis has some very good tunes, but production nearly ruins the album for me. What I've heard from Down To Earth was awful and I have no intention of ever buying it or any other post-Ozzmosis Ozzy album.

"Down to Earth" was the beginning of Ozzy's lackluster recorded output. It's just not a good album. You can chalk this up to changing music trends and Sharon and Ozzy chasing that newer wave of heavier rock and metal sounds, and also Zakk getting much more biker image-conscious and faux-heavy. All of them had lost the thread by then and never recovered.

Even the title doesn't offer any sort of vivid imagery or fit with Ozzy's vibe. Is he coming down to Earth? Is he a space alien like David Bowie? Or is he saying he's just a down-to-earth regular Joe? What's up here? The title really evokes nothing whatsoever.

By far my favorite song on the album. The riff to Perry Mason was pretty cool, but the song just kind of plods along and doesn't really build to anything. I Just Want You is fucking terrible. I cannot believe that became a big song for him. Ozzy has done some great ballads, but fuck that song.

After No More Tears surprised me by being so good I had really high hopes for this album...and boy shit-christ was I let down.

Perry Mason is a killer, ripping fucking song. I file it under "Perfect Hard Rock Songs". So Ozzmosis wins by default for that song alone.

I always had a soft spot for That I Never Had from Down To Earth. The live version from Live At Budokan shows his band at their best.

Ozzmosis.

I like the song too, but perfect? The subject matter alone brings it down a notch by being so unmetal. It's about equal to writing a song called "Matlock", fear chrissakes.

Lol - nice meme usage!

Tbh I don't pay attention to the words. It's Ozzy, for Christ's sake. Mr. Crowley isn't exactly what Patrick Bateman would call "lyrical craftsmanship" either

"Old LA Tonight" is easily one of my favorite ballads ever.

"Thunder Underground" and "My Jekyll Doesn't Hyde" are Ozzy at his heaviest and I've always loved those tunes. And actually, the B-side "Whole World's Fallin Down" might be one of my favorite heavy Ozzy songs ever. In fact, all of the B-sides from this album are pretty fuckin amazing. "Voodoo Dancer", "Aimee" "Living With The Enemy" - all killer songs.

"Tomorrow", "Denial", "Ghost behind My Eyes" - I can keep going. This album is still great to me, front to back. I'm gonna have to go listen to it today

What! That song has the line "Was it polemically sent?" Very highbrow. Thinking man's rock up there with Tesla and Queensryche.

I played the shit out of Down to Earth when it came out and “Facing Hell” is still one of my favorite Ozzy tracks. Ozzmosis is probably a better album as a whole, but i still like its successor.
