PV is better than Pump? Are you having a laugh?

Post by Chip Z'Hoy »

As established in the previous thread, PV is a great record but better than Pump? Are you joking my ass?

Side 1 of Pump is among the greatest Side 1's EVER, dudes: We got the "Young Lust" to "F.I.N.E." 1-2 punch, followed by "Love in an Elevator" (an all-time single-entendre classic), then "Monkey on My Back" (banger), and wrapping up with "Janie's Got a Gun," which is probably Aerosmith's finest tune. I said it and I meant it. It just ticks all the boxes.

A touch of filler on Side 2, but closes out with "What it Takes," possibly the greatest power ballad of the 80's.

Incredible sounding album too. It's got bass! So many hard rock bands in 1989 not wanting to disrupt FM radio by putting bass in their mixes. BULLSHIT.

Pump > PV

Same, but it's really close between all three.

I've warmed up to some of the deep cuts on 9L but still don't love it. Grip wins again.

"Janie's Got a Gun.... Aerosmith's finest tune.... ticks all the boxes"

Right, the 1st 2 boxes I check when I'm rating an Aerosmith song are:

1. Synthesiser
2. Electronic drums

I guess you must've lost your Rocks CD in a move or something.

Damn, dude. Okay, good point, strike it from the record.

Amend to read: 80'smith's finest tune.

I dunno. I always thought PV was better.

Then i got really into Pump.

However, i think i'm back to PV.

I dont care for What it Takes, though the rest of the universe seems to think it's one of their best ballads.
Young Lust is filler. Sorry
Not a huge fan of FINE's chorus (rest is good, tho)
The rest is great.

I HATE Angel, and dont hate anything on Pump, not sure if that should disqualify PV.

Also, despite it being about molestation, Janie... is still a ballad.

And LiaE is flat-out silly. Best part of the song is the bridge.

Pump just feels too calculated overall. The rockers don't really rock, they kinda sit in a mid-tempo pocket. Yes, PV had the song doctors too, but it's still Aerosmith, still has that swing.

One thing I'll agree on, the radio cuts were the worst songs on both records, except The Other Side, the horns make it cool.

Young Lust is Aerosmith best song
F.I.N.E is second best
It’s cool those are back to back on same cd. No reason ever to listen to any other songs or CDs from Aerosmith
Kik Tracee drummer should get a vote for Farewell setlist. He would get those two in for sure
Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

Agreed with the other two posts here: "Young Lust" is a great song and in no way filler. Sorry, Huey, but you're way off on that one. And "What It Takes" IS one of their best ballads, though if I had to go with absolute best, it'd be a tossup between that one and "You See Me Crying" off of Toys....

Pump is probably better than PV but as a huge Aerofanboi PV was a much bigger deal as it was THE record that put them back on the map and it made a much bigger impact on me. But yeah, there's certainly nothing as cringey as Angel on Pump...

That right there is my beef with it too. Yes yes, it has that "big sound" that everybody raves about, but it's actually kinda...dull. Just doesn't have anywhere near the energy of PV.

It's also the only early 90s ballad about child abuse that doesn't flat out suck. Motörhead and Babylon AD had ballads with the same theme and they were garbage. Can't even remember the others but there were one or two more, all released within a few years of the Aerosmith hit.

"Janie's" is a MURDER ballad.

Name another 80's ballad with the line "Put a bullet in his brain."

"I'll wait." - Tim Miller

This thread only highlights how even at their most commercial, every album is full of shit that doesn’t sound like anything else. No one sounds like Steven Tyler. No one wrote songs that sounded like any of these songs sounded. Unique as fuck.
Also, “What It Takes” alone should clarify that Tyler was a powerhouse singer. Not just a frontman, but a hell of a singer.

I won't say it's their best track from that era, but "Hangman Jury" is pretty damn good nonetheless.
