Top Hair Metal Power Ballads

Post by metalmike76 »

Not sure why it took us this long to do an episode on Power Ballads? We cover the rare, the huge hits, and everything in between.

What are some of your fav Power Ballads from the 80’s & 90’s?

Here’s a link to our episode - https://youtu.be/lKIMm5KMQnQ

I enjoy most of the power ballads from the hair metal era, but I'd have to go with Winger's "Headed For a Heartbreak" as my absolute favorite, followed by Kix's "Don't Close Your Eyes" and Faster Pussycat's "House of Pain", then maybe Warrant's "Heaven" or L.A. Guns' "Ballad of Jayne"? Those Winger, Kix, and FP ballads are my top three for sure, though.

Strangely enough, my 2 favorite power ballads were not released as singles:

Don’t Walk Away - Danger Danger

Without The Night - Winger

Both should have been released as singles IMO

Completely agreed on "Without the Night". "Don't Walk Away" would have been okay as a single, I guess.

Yeah, I never "watch" these. I just want the list, even though I'm 3% curious since everybody has one, there are hundreds on YouTube, and they're all different.

I went with my all-time most played according to LastFM, even though I haven't played some of these in ages:

"Wasted Time" Skid Row
"Little Dreamer" Van Halen***
"Hysteria" Def Leppard***
"Miles Away" Winger
"Fly High Michelle" Enuff Z'Nuff
"Is This Love" Whitesnake
"Don't Cry" Guns N' Roses
"Bed Of Roses" Warrant***
"People They Change" Tuff
"How Many Lies" Wildside
"Don't Close Your Eyes" Kix
"In A Darkened Room" Skid Row
"I Wanna Go Back" Eddie Money***
"Deep Cuts The Knife" Helix
"Just Another Night" Wildside
"I'll Be Alright Without You" Journey
"We All Die Young" Steelheart

***Are these considered ballads? I don't know and don't care that much, so they make the list!

Would Giant be considered a hair metal band? If so, my vote would go for "I'll See You in My Dreams".

Don't you know what clickbait is?!? If you don't, #7 WILL SHOCK YOU! You need to give the sneak preview to entice people to click to view/watch the rest. Count down 10-5, and say "for the rest of the list" watch our video along with 5 other people! If people think your list is cool, they might watch and give you a little YouTube ad click revenue. Then people will click, say "U SUCK!", and their view will contribute to your YouTube stats so Metal Mike can be the new Eddie Trunk.

Cemetery Gates - Pantera
Love you to death - Type O
Dry Country - Bon Jovi
Changes - Sabbath
Love is on the way - Saigon Kick
Dream Warriors - Dokken
Don’t Cry - GNR

In general i hated that super earnest pseudo sensitive hair metal ballad trope ala every rose or when the children cry or whatever that abomination was.

Alone Again - Dokken
Walk Away - Dokken
Lady Starlight - Scorpions

Forever Free - W.A.S.P.
Nobody's Fool - Cinderella
Angel Song - Great White
Love Is A Lie - Great White
Wasted Time - Skid Row
Under One Condition - Winger (nobody ever mentions this one)

Not sure if these count as "power ballads" or not, but:

Fever - Judas Priest
Beyond The Realms Of Death - Priest
Danger - Motley Crue
Widowmaker - W.A.S.P.
Kings And Queens - Aerosmith
Estranged - Guns N Roses (one of the best songs ever)
Winter's Call - Badlands
Who Wants To Live Forever - Queen
Who's The One - Winger
Dream On - Dio & Yngwie J Malmsteen

I like what you are saying there. I should definitely try that approach on here. I definitely have the click bait down to a science on Twitter, but not here. Metal Mike the new Eddie Trunk?😂 that sounds great, but probably not happening.

That’s a solid, impressive and respectable list, Chip. Your #1 choice is impeccable.

I like Extreme’s, Mr Big’s, DY’s and Bad English’s. Not sure your of your hang ups there. I get why people hate the White Lion song but I can’t hate anything Vito wrote or played on.

Heavily influenced by blues the time, I loved his intro to the solo on this. I remember playing it to some old timey blues guys and they were like, "get that shit it out of here".

"Strength" should've made my list.

Also, I see Saigon Kick's "Love is on the Way" up there. Also should've made my list. Great tune.

Two that I rarely see mentioned that should be held in way higher esteem are Alice Cooper's "Might As Well Be on Mars" and Queen's "Show Must Go On."
