Oh, he is.
He died several years ago.
I reckon all songs are folk songs. I ain't never heard no horses singing any.

Ross Robinson.
He has made some important records, but he (along with Blackie) really worked overtime to make those great songs on Crimson Idol sound like absolute shit. Awful drum sounds, lifeless guitars, comically bad reverb on the vocals. Sounds like a basement demo.
I picked up The Cure's comeback album (self titled) years ago and couldn't believe how bad it sounded. Looked who produced it.... surprise, surprise.... Ross Robinson.

But all is forgiven as his albums usually have great vocals and he is behind one of the best guitar sounds in hard rock. Kee Marcello on Out of This World.

I can't stand Kevin Shirley. He helped ruin Maiden (along with Steve Harris).

Tom Werman (especially after Shout At the Devil, which is a little thin in and of itself)
Greg Ladanyi - makes drums to "boxy" and guitars too small
Roy Thomas Baker - some good early work with Queen and then it just doesn't do it for me
Those who I almost always like:
Ted Templeman
Jon Brion
Bill Bottrell
Keith Olsen
Bruce Fairbairn
Gary Katz

Kevin Shirley keeps getting mentioned...not familiar with too much he did but the By Your Side album by the Black Crowes sounds almost perfect to me.

Wholeheartedly agree. Glad I'm not the only one.
I nominate Spencer Proffer. Always hated how he took the balls off rhythm guitars by adding synthesizers in

And The Cult. He killed their career.Love_Industry wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 4:02 am Michael Beinhorn and Richie Zito made previously great sounding bands / artists sound like arse.
Heart, Soundgarden, Cheap Trick, Ozzy, Bad English (compared to Journey..)

Good call. Think they tried to blame grunge but it didn't hurt the sales of No More Tears, released the same week... and I'm not sure who killed Poison's career more. Zito, Kotzen or Kurt Cobain.Bono Nettencourt wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 8:32 amAnd The Cult. RTB did well by The Cars. Local H's Pack Up The Cats was the last good record of his I've heard. Anything he's done in the 21st century has been hit or miss.Van Ailin' wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 9:20 pm Tom Werman (especially after Shout At the Devil, which is a little thin in and of itself)

Jon Brion and Bill Bottrell are producers who play to the artists' strengths. For them the song will always come first. It probably helps that they are producers who also write.
Gary Katz can produce a great sophisticated pop record. He falters when he tried to tackle more hard rock material.
Ted Templeman is good at keeping productions as simple as possible. Bands who work with Ted tend to have records that translate well to the live stage.
Keith Olsen and Bruce Fairbairn know to use just enough bells and whistles to get a rock band to have just enough polish to cross over into top 40 pop territory.
Re: Producers you can't stand because of their signature sound
I can't stand Toby Wright's sludgy production, especially the drums. Listen to the following and tell me the drums don't sound like complete shit:
Queensryche - Hear in the Now Frontier
KISS - Carnival of Souls
Alice In Chains - 1995 Dog Album

Re: Producers you can't stand because of their signature sound
The songs are a bigger problem than the drum sound on all those albums.
