First Metal Song?

Post by DiamondDog »

I saw a Facebook reel where a guy makes his choice for the first heavy metal song. Before I reveal it, what's your pick? His was a "thinking outside the box" pick, I'll give that much a hint as to what his choice was.

Kinks - You Really Got Me, 1964?
At least from more well known bands.
There may well be some obscure Portuguese or Czech band that recorded a metal type song before that 😀

Fuck that shit. I've never heard anything before Black Sabbath's debut that was true heavy metal.

Summertime Blues, but with more fuzz?? Feh.
Just singing the words "heavy metal thunder" in your biker rock song does not make it heavy metal.
You really got me, helter skelter and anything the Who or Hendrix did, while fuzzy and powerful, are also not metal.

None of the songs mentioned so far can be called ''metal''. But neither can the crap you people listen like Cinderella or Tuff, yet here we are.

In A Gadda Da Vida, baby. Iron Butterfly were supposedly the first band ever referred to in the press to be "heavy metal".

Yes, but these bands definitely inspired metal. So they were proto-metal in a way, even if they weren't truly metal.

This book starts in biblical times, digging out the earliest metal... And then (spoiler alert) concludes that it was Tony and Geezer who invented the stuff.

I'm pretty sure we can all mostly agree Sabbath perfected what we think of as Metal Now

But as for the origins, Just about all the songs listed have elements of some sort of Metal, and there have been ton of opinions on how to define the term over the years.
Poison, Van Halen, White Lion were all considered HM at one time. Christ, Bon Jovi was once considered the Saviour for the entire genre.

That article is funny, as the writer seems to think (in 1986) AC/DC is dead and Metallica and WASP have no future :D :D :D

Indeed. Heavy metal "down and out" in 1986 when Ozzy, Priest, VH, DLR and Mötley did huge arena tours? Wtf??

He was sort of right about WASP though, they had already peaked commercially (Headless Children is my fav but it didn't sell...) and the AC/DC comment is understandable. In 1986, both them and Sabbath were well on their way to becoming Uriah Heep type hasbeens. Who Made Who was a dead cat bounce hit and Thunderstruck was five years away.
