How succesful or well regarded is Todd Rundgren in the US?

Quite the genius, isn't he?
Do you like his music or is he a pretentious ass?

I don't like him when he tries to be soulful, his way of singing and producing is too "white" for that.
But he has great stuff.

He was a big deal for the Vietnam/baby-boomer generation. I remember my dad having the Nazz albums.

Nowadays he's known for a couple classic-rock staples. Star of yester-year.

check out the lead guitar work on meatloaf's bat out of hell, that guy was a real killer player. i dont know if its him on the entire album but its him on guitar on the tittle track and thats some pretty impressive playing.

I would think he's regarded as a guy who has played on, wrote &/or produced a ton of music, a lot of which no one has any clue about. As far as success, not sure what kind of deals he cut along the way. One would hope he has plenty of cash in 2023, if by nothing than volume of work over length of years.
