How blown away were you by Marching Out?

Post by Don't Damn Me »

I'll never forget driving back from the city with my older brother and his friend. They were all about the latest car stereo gear and Metal. They pop a cassette on and I have no idea what it is. I'm just laid out in the backseat, probably high from smoking weed, and I'll See the Light Comes On, and I'm like what is this? Then Don't Let it End and Disciples of Hell... epic.
I remember thinking Metal has achieved perfection. Perfect vocals perfect guitar I was blown away. I always considered it a classic. When I moved to LA in 87 I saw Jeff Scott Soto play at the Troubadour. I think it was a cover band? I recall him singing Little Guitars by Van Halen. But coming from New Jersey this guy was a legend to me. After the set I asked him for a autograph and these girls laughed at me. I just thought to myself "don't they know he's on Marching Out - a classic?"

Marching Out by Yngwie Malmsteen? “I’ll See the Light Tonight?”

Yes. Changed how I saw (or heard) guitar. Phenomenal album.

Saw one of his first solo shows at The Kabuki in SF. It was epic. Yngwie is God signs in the crowd. This midget dude kept slamming into my my bud's back until finally my bud elbowed him in the face and he stopped. Saw him a couple years later with Talas opening at the San Jose Civic...

I liked his shrapnel releases with Steeler and Alcatrazz, but then was blown away by his solo band. Rising Force was quite impressive, but Marching Out was stunning.

Soto was and still is a powerhouse of a singer.

Yeah it was great. A surprisingly quick and extreme shift to metal compared to Rising Force (which is also great), but it was smooth and natural and not contrived. Not a weak song on it either. I got to see him in on this tour January 86 opening for Dio and I was so pumped. I was so into his playing at the time and he was so young and driven and focused. Great show.
