The definitive live hair band album?

Post by SchenkerFan »

Plenty of 70s rock and metal bands had an iconic live release: Unleashed in the East, Live and Dangerous, Tokyo Tapes, Alive, Made in Japan, etc.

When it comes to glam, I can't really think of too many killer live albums, even less when it comes to material dating from their peak years. Maybe World Wide Live ... Scorps were a 70s band though. Beast from the East maybe?

Choice is limited it seems. Was there just a lack of interest for live albums in the 80s? We never got an 80s Leppard, Crue, Jovi or RATT live album.

Jon was having a lot of vocal issues during the prime BJ years. Maybe that's why they never put out a live album. You'd think they'd find a way to correct it like they did with most bands.

Would you settle for an EP?

Maybe Queensryche: Operation LiveCrime. It's good, but there's no reason to listen to it over the actual Mindcrime album.

W.A.S.P. Live in the Raw might be the best choice. It was a good live greatest hits for them. I listened to it pretty often.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm going with this...

Image

It captured a band at the height of their popularity (when most live albums tend to be retrospectives) and was low-key one of the most influential albums of its time.

World Wide Live is the correct answer. Swallow This Live! is a close second for me.

The drum sound on Swallow This Live is just terrible. Whole thing sounds like an unmixed soundboard audio.

World Wide Live is an excellent sounding live album. I don't consider myself a huge Scorpions fan, but great is great.

I also thought of Tribute. It is from the era if not true hair band...

Swallow This Live--I would have turned down the crowd noise a bit but overall it captures the era perfectly. The new tracks are great too. Also the album cover really captures the Poison/glam era.

It is interesting that the Live-album rock explosion of the 70's kind of faded by the 80s. You had multiple bands who literally made their career off of a live album in the 70s. I wonder what changed?

Technically, they did release a live album...and it sucks. One Wild Night.

It sucks primarily for the reason you described, no live tracks from 1986 to 1994, and then just two tracks from 1985.

It came out in 2007, but Y&T's One Hot Night is pretty solid.

Beast From The East is a good call.

This is a really good thread because it's clear from the answers that there really weren't any hairband-era live albums worth writing home about. Never thought about that before.

Poison live is the best we can come up with? Damn.

The Ozzy and Scorps ones are excellent, but not hair metal in my book...

The best one I have that I listen to regularly is Beast in the East. 2nd place would be the live 83 LA Forum disc on the deluxe edition of Pyromania...

Mötley's Entertainment or Death is also great, but is just a collage of various shows, as is GnR's double live album...

Gonna have to check out Swallow This Live, eeesh!

Many bands in the 80s opted for live videos instead of albums: Leppard In the Round, WASP at the Lyceum, VH Live Without a Net, Dio Special from the Spectrum, Ozzy Bark at the Moon Live, Kiss Animalize Live Uncensored....

As for the question, yes Tesla's Five Man... is the right answer. Poison is a good answer too but it came out too late, towards the end of 1991 and the hair metal era.

I think the bands we discuss here were a lot more reliant studio magic (gang chorus vocals etc) than their 70s counterparts. That's probably why they're so reliant on tapes now.

This is a solid choice and good perspective. When other bands were doing the acoustic thing on MTV awards show, these guys went all in, yet kept it genuine. It also caught peeps off guard with their versatility.

I love old Hanoi and most of the later offshoots but the Cherry Bombz were not a high point. That live album is a sloppy mess and not in a good way.

Obviously I'm going to answer the original question with Hanoi's 'All Those Wasted Years'.
