Grammy-winning, progressive music titans DREAM THEATER have announced the return of drummer Mike Portnoy to the group.

"It's great to be back true to form with our original drummer Mike Portnoy. We started playing together as MAJESTY almost 40 years ago and I am excited to see what this next phase of DREAM THEATER creates for the future. I wish nothing but the best for Mike Mangini for all the blood, sweat and tears he put into DT during his 13-year tenure with the band," adds John Myung.

It's still cool he gets to close out DT as a founding member. I haven't given much about them since the first album and Images and Words. Got old after that. Be even better if they get a good singer and go out on a high note(or at least one in key)!

It’s not like Mike has been politicking his way back in for years now. At this juncture only the bands small following gives a fuck.

Side note: On today’s Trunk show, Eddie made Mike’s comeback to DT announcement into a promo for his upcoming 40th anniversary party in less than 30 seconds of making said announcement. What a bitch.

so, is he going to be the rock star spokesperson for them? He seemed to always have an opinion about something and talked way too much about anything and everything. As far as DT, never was a fan but best of luck to them.

Try the 2013 s/t album. I also thought that they got repetitive after some albums but that one was a return to form and sounds more like I&W / Awake than the albums they did in between. But Portnoy isn't on it...

In my opinion, Portnoy got lazy when he started doing the Avenged/ Winery projects. His technique isn't what it once was. Mangini drums circles around him but I see why they did it. Dream Theater is just a boring band. No getting around it. They need whatever help they can to shake things up at this point.


Aslo, the fact that Petrucci and Portnoys wives are in a band together makes this move make sense too. I can imagine the pillow talk. "Oh honey, just let Mike come back. It would make Marlene so happy" lol


Ultimately, I dont see how it will be much of a difference from where things are at now. Dream Theater = Yawnfest.


Labrie needs to get dumped for some up and coming new kid. If they could find a guy that is to Coverdale what Dino Jelusick is... Someone who is a Labrie copycat, but thats actually a good singer. They might have something.
