There's a lot of anger in the clip of Hall on Bill Maher's podcast that they have in that TMZ interview. Dude has a chip on his shoulder.

I agree. It sounded just like EVH diminishing Michael Anthony's contributions. Why go there? Most people know you're the brain of the operation.JackieDaytona wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 7:54 am There's a lot of anger in the clip of Hall on Bill Maher's podcast that they have in that TMZ interview. When one does that "trailing laughter" thing at the end of their sentences, they're pissed about something.JackieDaytona wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 7:54 am There's a lot of anger in the clip of Hall on Bill Maher's podcast that they have in that TMZ interview. Dude has a chip on his shoulder.

Uh oh.
Sounds like the dreaded "Garfunkel Syndrome."
Lou Costello and The Everly Brothers suffered from it too.
Cher successfully beat it.

Hall: "We were separate on the records, too." (ref. that Bill Maher interview)
I knew I had read this not too long ago, and indeed, I found the quote from Oates, where he agrees with that sentiment; he did back in 2013, anyway:
There's nothing new there at least, though the lawsuit is definitely a recent development. Sad.

ref: The TelegraphThey have always objected to being referred to as Hall & Oates, however. “The idea of this two-headed monster is not anything we’ve ever wanted,” Oates noted in 2013.

Probably nothing to do with it but saw a recent interview where Oates was saying he came up with Maneater originally, but I could imagine Hall being that petty to have a problem with it.

The album was a flop tho, and H2O fell off the charts forever 5 years after.Mister Freeze wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 3:24 pmVinceVanLane wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 2:54 pm "I don't know what Oates does, but Hall never had a hit record without him." - Chris Rock

Hall said the same thing about "Maneater" 15 years ago. It started as an Oates song with completed chords and at least some of the lyrics. Hall rearranged it and maybe added a bit here and there, and Sara Allen added a few new lyrics.Ziggy Sawdust wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 4:14 pm Probably nothing to do with it but saw a recent interview where Oates was saying he came up with Maneater originally, but I could imagine Hall being that petty to have a problem with it.

Re: Hall & Oates: Hall Sues Oates Over Hit Songs
That's largely accurate. Hall, while the more important of the two as a writer and singer, didn't exactly leave a lasting impression without Oates, except for his TV show years later. (I think he invited Oates on a couple of times.) As well, he couldn't have made it so big without Sara and Janna Allen, who also co-wrote a bunch of their hits.VinceVanLane wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 2:54 pm "I don't know what Oates does, but Hall never had a hit record without him." - Chris Rock

You can't rely on the old band's money
I bet Hall used a Private Eye to find out what Oates was doing. They're watching you. They see your every move.

What I don't understand is how he can prevent Oates from performing certain songs live. Can an artist not perform any song they like live? I'm not talking about royalties, just the right to perform a song.
