I knew I had read this not too long ago, and indeed, I found the quote from Oates, where he agrees with that sentiment; he did back in 2013, anyway:

They have always objected to being referred to as Hall & Oates, however. “The idea of this two-headed monster is not anything we’ve ever wanted,” Oates noted in 2013.

Hall said the same thing about "Maneater" 15 years ago. It started as an Oates song with completed chords and at least some of the lyrics. Hall rearranged it and maybe added a bit here and there, and Sara Allen added a few new lyrics.

That's largely accurate. Hall, while the more important of the two as a writer and singer, didn't exactly leave a lasting impression without Oates, except for his TV show years later. (I think he invited Oates on a couple of times.) As well, he couldn't have made it so big without Sara and Janna Allen, who also co-wrote a bunch of their hits.
