What Was The Deal With Marillion?
I remember every European metal mag in the 80's (Kerrang, etc.) always had at least one article on Marillion.....But, after just taking a dive into them, they aren't metal by any stretch of the imagination. Sort of like luke warm Phil Collins meets Mr Mister.
Were they another one of those bands that were some European phenomenon but never caught on in the states?

That song called Kayleigh put them in the spotlight. All the Genesis fans got into them. Then they went shít. They didnt do anything good other than the kayleigh song.

It's pretty much the only song I've really heard from them, but it's good, and it actually crossed over to #74 on the Hot 100 chart. Other than that, yeah, they were definitely more popular in Europe.maninblack wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:46 am That song called Kayleigh put them in the spotlight. All the Genesis fans got into them. Re: What Was The Deal With Marillion?
The singer sounded a lot like Phil Collins. So much so that I couldn't really take them seriously.
If the music was drastically different it wouldn't have mattered all that much but it wasn't. They just sounded way too much like Phil Collins era Genesis and it seemed like it was on purpose.
The original singer even wore facepaint on stage during a few tours that looked a lot like Peter Gabriel's.
By the time Fish left the band and they got a new singer they had already gone downhill musically so it didn't really matter.
They had some decent stuff but not enough to make them essential listening. I could never get past the impression they were ripping off Genesis.

They were one of those bands that I only ever saw mentioned in the British Rock press.
Claytown Troupe and Balaam & The Angel are other examples.
None of them were all that good.

I agree those are masterpieces.
Fish is not everyone’s cup of tea, vocally.
If you don’t like the early stuff, try Seasons End, Holidays In Eden, Marbles or This Strange Engine with Hogarth singing.
The first 3 or 4 Fish solo albums kick major ass also.
I’ve fallen out of love with them the las couple releases.
A lot of slow, plodding tunes.

A couple of my friends had their "known" album. The one with their hit. Remember thinking it was OK. Then they vanished.

The whole album is a masterpiece, I would argue that Blind Curve is better than kayleigh.maninblack wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:46 am That song called Kayleigh put them in the spotlight. The song called market square hero was ok too. Thern came the song that put a lot of people off them, where the lyrics went sort of " lavender blue dilly dilly " .

Yeah, kerrang was great back in the day. There werent many news sources for rock music, which ( rock music ) was and always has been shunned by british radio and the british media, newspapers ets. Rock muisic was HUGE in britain and all the jobs for people presenting news etc in the media in britain were given to people who shouldnt have been allowed to do it, who shunned rock music and bigged up all the talentless pop shít. Music that was selling HUGE was un derground because the jobs in the music media were given to arrogant imbeciles who hated rock.VinnieVincentsVag wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 4:06 pmMarket Square heroes is great.maninblack wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 4:01 pm The song called market square hero was ok too. Re: What Was The Deal With Marillion?
All I remember is that Clutching At Straws is one of the most depressing concept albums ever recorded. Wasn't is supposed to be semi-autobiographic?

I never trusted anyone who liked this band.
Re: What Was The Deal With Marillion?
Yeah, it's basically about Fish being an alcoholic. The keyboard riff on Incommunicado is incredible though. The 2nd Wolfsbane album Down Fall The Good Guys was mostly about Blaze being an alcoholic too, and was mostly depressing.

Re: What Was The Deal With Marillion?
I've always thought they were the answer to the question "What would Genesis sound like if Peter Gabriel sang on the late '70s - early '80s albums?". Marillion were so much more than that though. I never listened to much after Fish left but I really like their early records

Fish was such an excellent lyricist with a lot of emotion in his voice.Gibsonite wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:19 amI've always thought they were the answer to the question "What would Genesis sound like if Peter Gabriel sang on the late '70s - early '80s albums?". Technically not a great singer.
You really should check out the couple they put out with H on vocals.
Some good stuff

Never given them much of a chance because they seemed like boring Dad rock and they are VinnieVincentsVag favourite band.
I like Genesis so perhaps I will give them listen over this Christmas break.

Re: What Was The Deal With Marillion?
Solid band, though I only have 6 or 7 albums.
Yep, "Mispalced Childhood" was their breakout album, but the next one "Clutching At Straws" was also great, the first one was also interesting.
By 1994 they released a masterpiece called "Brave" a really stunning conceptual album.

This was their attempt to enter mainstream almost hair rock back in the day.
