Bands with the worst health problems

Post by Traxan »

Aldious, the band that started me on my Japanese girl band following, lost another member due to a health problem, which got me to wondering what other bands have had such a lousy streak. Aldious's body count is pretty big:

Singer Rami - undisclosed brain condition. She returned to music but did very little
Singer Re:no - ear condition caused her eustacean tubes to open, nearly causing her to faint on stage.
Singer Rin - mental breakdown, dropped 10kg and was hospitalized
Drummer Marina Bozzio (Terry's stepdaughter) - ulcerative colitis.

The first American band that comes to mind is Nevermore.

Warrel - diabetes, dead from a heart attack
Tim Calvert - dead from ALS
Steve Smyth - kidney failure
Jim Sheppard - brain tumor

Who else has had shitty luck?

I know the Japanese are obsessed with crazy gangbang bondage. Especially with very young women. Could this pedo/abusive fetish be partly to blame for Aldious' health issues?

Their career was dead long before any of the band members were.

Most top tier touring rock bands these days are in phenomenal physical condition. I’d think Aerosmith is the obvious answer, but then again they’re ~75, all physically ripped, and were still doing it as of a couple months ago.

Thinking I’ll pick pre-J5 Motley. Vince and Mick require no explanation, there’s no way Tommy is healthy at 61 after all the smoking and drinking that he still does, so they’ve got one healthy guy out of four.

Ringo spent years in hospital as a kid. And got subbed out in 64 on tour when he had tonsillitis.

The Grateful Dead weren't exactly the healthiest band around. Many of their members didn't come remotely close to qualifying for senior discounts. It was a minor miracle that Jerry Garcia - super overweight, lifelong smoker, diabetic, heroin and cocaine addict - made it into his 50s. Two of their keyboard players died in their 30s. (One died of a speedball, the other in a car accident before the heroin and/or alcohol could get him.) Another keyboardist, the first one, checked out at 27 after years of basically drinking himself to death. Yet another died in his 50s, sadly as a result of suicide. Amazingly, Phil Lesh is in his 80s after surviving Hep C, a liver transplant, and multiple types of cancer.

Early drummer John Hinch too, and Halford almost died from an overdose in 1985.

Possessed singer Jeff Bercera lost ability to walk after armed robbery. Still performs in a wheelchair. Also he told me on twitter that one of his eyes is almost blind

Yeah... and why didn't they wait to film their BtM until he recovered?
